So far, it's shaping up to be better than Freak Show or Hotel, both of which I abandoned mid season.
The only season worth the name imho was Asylum. Parts of others have been alright, but starting with the witches, it's started to drift too much into Glee territory.
I do agree, Kathy Bates is awesome. I hope there isn't as much Gaga as last season. blech.

I saw the episode last night, but of course I did not recognize her.
And I quite loved Gaga in Hotel.

Woot I think I am caught up now. I think I saw 3 episodes, that was all that was available on Hulu this weekend so I assume I am. I actually really like it. I really don't like Sarah Paulson and once again she is the main person which sucks but I love how they have the whole TV look where they are telling the story while 'reenactments' are being shown. The hippy witch plays the real wife which I like. It was confusing at first because I was like I don't like Sarah and Tony said that isn't Sarah that is the hippy witch (which is what we call her from The Coven season lol) We didn't realize at first that it was two different people and what they were doing with the story telling.

Are the seasons of this show dependent upon each other, or is each season its own encapsulated story?

Both...
They can all be watched separately without needing to know what happened in the rest (I still haven't got to watch Hotel
) but there are rumors and a few glimpses of how they tie together in the end. The same cast plays different people and storylines in each season.
