That's basically my approach to you... what will be will be. I don't know whether you were talking about me in the CJIS thread recently... maybe, maybe not, but if you were you were calling me cold for not interjecting on your behalf when your reputation was going down the shitter. But I'll answer that now, on the offchance you were talking to me. How can I go to bat for you when I a) don't know the whole story, or in this current business, any of the story and b) am just as likely to come under fire from you when I'm kind to you as unkind... I mean ffs if I so much as kudos you in a way that doesn't meet your expectations you go off on one. You're just surrounded by eggshells. So call that cold if you want, but I think it's perfectly reasonable given the circumstances. So with you I just exercise the 'prime directive' which is not to interfere. If you've made a bed, lie in it. If you haven't, don't. I don't know if you have or haven't but either way what will be will be. If you've done something bad enough to warrant being banned... then so be it... that's what will be. If you haven't, and you stay, then that's what will be. But either way I'm not going to interfere, and that is one bed you have made and are now lying in.

I think the confusion might have come from the fact that we can't automatically verify external communications like we can with PMs. That doesn't mean we can't do it, just that we need some evidence.

My point is that it doesn't matter. If you're referring to private conversations with someone, you're either breaking confidence or you're misquoting them.

For example, I can easily draw up a fake PM and post it, claiming some nobby sent it to me. To the forum at large, they have no idea whether it's genuine or not. If it's not, I deserve to have my head kicked in for it as well. Well, I assume so. If doing this is perfectly fine and wouldn't be punished, the rules are just as lacking. Or I can say, "Mr X called me and told me he is going to leave his wife". There's no need to confirm what was actually said in the phone call. The fact I'm even referring to this should be enough for staff to take action against me. The forum at large would not be told either way, even if you could confirm, and it's the fact that they are able to read it which is the problem in the first place.

Bottom line is that this is a discussion forum, there is no need whatsoever to bring up personal conversations with anyone about private issues. And people doing so, or pretending to do so, should be taken round the back and stapled to a tree with staples. I wouldn't want to be part of a place that allows this.

I'm talking about conversations between forum members here. Conversations with non-members are different and shouldn't be covered except where there is a legal problem which would indeed involve verification. I can tell everyone what my dad told me on the phone if I want and shouldn't be actioned.

If in fact it's too bad and people are allowed to discuss private conversations, then I don't see why discussing the contents of a forum PM is any different. As I explained, verification is irrelevant, unless slander is acceptable.

And of course, such a rule should be used sensibly and not robotically.

A spoken conversation is no different to a letter or a text chat, if no one else can verify any of it. Yet it should all remain private anyway.

Except you should mind your own fucking business if the person's whose correspondence is revealed in any way doesn't complain about it, not start bitching on the forum on their behalf.

Regarding posting your own correspondence, I agree that in itself shouldn't be actionable. But if it reveals private information about other people, then it should be. And if it refers to a previous message which was private and makes clear what points are being addressed, that is also unacceptable IMO. You can't just write whatever you want and claim sanctuary.

Also, we're not here to potty train people. If they have to be told what is and isn't acceptable basic human behaviour, they need to go learn elsewhere.

EP, looks like you're headed down the rabbit hole. I suggest that you not go there. In the grand scheme of things, how important is it to you to chase this issue that was put to bed awhile back? And what do you expect the results of your efforts to be, for you and for others in relation to you? 

From my vantage point, if you keep this up I see no win for you, nothing positive will come of it.
