Oh, ffs.

Addressing the bickering, I think those that treat this as a simply voluntary organization with rules accepted or denied by consenting adults underestimate the influence of the church in hanging a reservation in hell over the heads of its devout with this type of shit. Boru is correct in his estimation of the abject lack of concern the church has with the emotional well being of its flock.

I think there's also a lack of consideration for Catholic majority nations turning this into the law of the land. Might want to seek out a Pole if your confused about my meaning.

Tolerance of illiberal principles is indicative of the regressive left. This type of religious based bullshit deserves all the derision and ridicule one can muster.

Not to mention that religion in adults is most often an artifact of childhood programming, further reducing the sense of choice in the devout.

I feel quite comfortable shaking my head with a gentle laugh at this sort of nonsense, just as I do with many organizations I don't belong to. And it means just as much -- zero, zip, zilch, nada.

If you can better argue that point about a Catholic equivalent of Sharia law being reinstuted into existence after centuries of progress in the opposite direction I might just pay your fears some further mind.

Look up the six countries that outlaw abortion under any circumstance, discover what they share in common and get back to me.

It would also behoove you to look up the actual definition of fatwa. Better look up metaphor while you're at it. Humor may also be in order.

If you like, you can go to 'Dearly Departed' thread and announce that you're taking a break while you look up 'anathema'.

I care and am offended. Now I wonder how this will personally effect some of the people I'm friends with. Some have had the cremains on the mantle for years. Pretty insensitive oh the church is you ask me.

Pope John Paul I:

“. . . this morning, I flushed my toilet with a solid gold lever edged with diamonds and at this very moment, bishops and cardinals are using a bathroom on the second floor of the papal palace which trappings, I am told, would draw more than fifty million dollars at auction . . . Believe me, one day, we who live in opulence, while so many are dying because they have nothing, will have to answer to Jesus as to why we have not carried out His instruction, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself.’ We, the clergy of the Church together with our congregations, who substitute gold and pomp and ceremony in place of Christ’s instruction, who judge our masquerade of singing His praises to be more precious than human life, will have the most to explain.”

LOL... Of course catholic church is against keeping human remains at home - they benefit from sale of grave plots and funerals. Quite frankly - I'm surprised they haven't instituted such a ban before, but I suppose cremation is only now starting to become popular in many catholic countries.

Personally - I wouldn't give a sh*t if the priests dipped their d*cks in the ashes of every dead catholic. They protect child-rapists and propagate the spread of AIDS as well as promote overpopulation in the poorest parts of the world. They forbid divorces, even in cases of abuse. They reap huge tax-free profits and manipulate political and legal systems in many countries, for their benefit. They hold back progress and promote ignorance. I could go on...

This thing about people's ashes - that's nothing. That's like finding out, that Jack the Ripper had dirty fingernails.

What if Granny had Gramp's ashes turned into a gemstone for a pendant? Is the pope gonna come yank it off her turkey neck?

I find that number to be a gross exaggeration. First of all people like me are being counted in that 1bn+ number of catholics, because there's now no way for you to officially leave the rcc. Secondly a lot of people no longer listen to the church on most (if not all) issues even if they self describe as catholics, for example gay marriage passed by a two to one majority in Ireland despite the church vehemently demanding adherents vote against it and Ireland being officially 84% catholic (I've big issues with that number, because of the way the religion question is worded in the census, privileging catholicism and because mammies still write in their adult children to the census in large numbers, and will put catlick down even if they know their darling young one is loudly and vehemently atheist).
