Atheism is irrational.

RE: Atheism is irrational.
Holy shit! You're the first theist to come in here and claim atheism is irrational.

Listen, your religion, and others like it, defined god. You gave it shape (it looks like man), you gave it function and you even gave it purpose. Based on the parameters you gave, and needing nothing else, we are able to logically, intellectually deny its existence.

Please provide some testable evidence of a god and show why one god is real and the others false
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud ..... after a while you realise that the pig likes it!

Not good enough.  Philosophy is useless if you can't demonstrate the actual entity, here in the real world.

Quote:So, it is a big mistake to know God directly from the Bible without the aid of the Catholic Church.

Are you implying that the Jewish people, who were the authors of the foundational books of your religion, need to talk to Pope Frankie to see if they got it right?  Heeheeheeheehee!

The only "aid" I want from the RCC, by the way, is about $15 million USD in weregild for the damages they inflicted on My ancestral homestead in Norway a thousand years ago. Prime real estate in Oslo ain't cheap, y'know.  Failing that, I would like to live long enough to see that bloated and evil cult collapse into itself like a black hole on steroids.

I wouldn't go so far. Philosophy is a bit more complicated than that. Its value can't always be as apparent as one would like, but you can be sure everything from the way we do politics and science is based on it.

How is science "self-defeating"? What does that even mean?

I understand how drug addiction is self-defeating. One seeks relief, but only causes oneself more pain. How is that analogous to say, germ theory or the scientific method itself?

And Aquinas' argument used by the OP was intriguing at the time, but has been so thoroughly debunked for so long, it's weird that anyone mentions it beyond its use as an introductory tool in Philosophy 101.

This is the part where he pukes up a tubful of word salad and claims that he has demonstrated his point via metaphysics. I'm afraid it doesn't get any better than that.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Maybe he is referring to the practice at science conferences of presenting your work and having all the other scientists do their level best to shoot it down?

theologian Wrote:Whatever is rational utilizes either the senses, the intellect or both.

Atheism cannot deny God by using senses. For, to deny something by the use of senses is to search the whole physical reality, just as ruling out that there's no alien is to search all that is searchable which is impossible for us humans. But God, by demonstration of His effects, shows that He is beyond physical reality. Hence, it is the more that God can't be denied by the senses.

Atheism cannot deny God by the intellect. For, whatever we can deny by the use of our intellect, must be defined, just as we deny circle things as square, for the definition of circle is different from the definition of square. But, God can't be define, because if He has definition, He can't be God, because by demonstration of His existence through His effects, He is necessarily Boundless. Hence, God can't be denied by the intellect.

Therefore, if to be rational is able to use senses and our intellect, and that God can't be denied both by the senses and intellect, then atheism is necessarily irrational.
