What book are you reading?

Its an old one, one i found in my father's collection. I'm half way through it. And it is really good. For a book written in the 70s, its well detailed and seems highly scientific.

I suggest you also read it's sequel, "The Gripping Hand" as well as Nivens Ringworld series.

I like Niven best when he co-writes. Not sure why, but it lends his work an extra measure of depth, I think.

Ditto, but I'm still on A Game of Thrones. I thought I posted that earlier but the forum seems to have eaten it.

Can you please suggest which to start with?

I'd suggest starting with Perdido Street Station. Many of the books are connected in a way, but each is in a different genre (sort of). He is pretty unique, and his vocabulary has to be the best I've read.

Thanks, I'll give it a go!

I love Mote in God's Eye and Gripping Hand. Heh.

My dad and I use the term "gripping hand" in the same context as the books. Mystifies my mother and sisters. Wink

I thought in NY that involved punching the gas and swear at other drivers. Or is that LA?

I have just finished God's Battalions: The Case for the Crusades, which I found a really good book which re-butts revisionist views of the Crusades which currently dominate.

I'm reading "The philosophy of science" by Stephen Toulmin, a book I happened to find amongst an old flatmate's massive collection of old books when we had power cuts during an earthquake and I needed something to do. It'd old, 1953, and it's got that 'damp paper' smell common to old books, but it's a damn good read and most of the content is still valid even though the examples he uses to illustrate his ideas is a little dated at times.
