My e-mail was Hacked!

RE: My e-mail was Hacked!
Kind of late now, but the best thing to do to avoid this sort of thing is to avoid using the most obvious passwords out there:

Seems like there's lots of sexual passwords which are easy to guess, as well as simple keyboard patterns. If your password is one that's on this list, best to change it immediately. You can bet that hacker bots are probably programmed with all these. Best to use some caps, numbers and punctuation characters in your password. And be sure to change it every so often. Oh, and never use the same password for everything. If they get into your email, then they'd have your password for everything else, too.

About my password, it was always complicated so I have no clue how my account could have been breached from a guess. I changed it to another complicated password.

I work in IT, and I was duped into entering my hotmail password into a web form. Luckily I quickly realised and changed my passwords quickly. I wasn't affected. Part of a good password regime is to change your passwords regularly.

You're in IT and gave away your password? Maybe a new job is in order.Smile

Phishing is a very common form of attack, one that even I'll admit to being fooled by before. They are often very clever, exploiting numerous browser vulnerabilities, and are quite hard to detect by most users. The key to remember is to never enter your password into a site that you clicked through to get to. In other words, always type the URL or save it as a bookmark in your browser.

Also, if you aren't logging in, or requesting a password reset, then there is (usually) no need to enter or confirm your password.

Same here, and I am in IT as well. Fortunately I spotted the malformed link in time and changed all passwords.

RE: My e-mail was Hacked!
One good way to come up with a good password is to come up with a phrase that's familiar to you, then enter the first letter of each word, perhaps with a period or some other punctuation mark in between the letters. For example, you could use the phrase "There once was a man from Nantucket" as T.o.w.a.m.f.N as a password which would be hard to guess. Then when you want to change it, use the next line "Who had a d*ck so long he could suck it" and a different character in between them: W;h;a;d;s;l;h;c;s;i. Maybe throw in a few numbers as well.

The internet and third party services are not your home. Never was, never will be. Run your own servers and then you can be pissed as all get out over being compromised.

You did assume it was a person hacking you, and then asked how to track them off of their IP, a wholly ridiculous notion that seems to be put forth only by media. Had you learned about networking, you would've known that most IPs are dynamically assigned and shuffled around. Also, most competent bot net creators and crackers have multiple hops or places they tunnel through so as to appear to be based at one IP when they're really at another.
