That's sad but true. Wealthy fat cats ginning up controversies between various groups to distract the poors from picking up torches and pitchforks against the rich and powerful.

Not just any controversy between different groups, but specifically those contraversies most heavily based on prejudice, ignorance, and short sightedness. The more stoked any group becomes about controversies based on those qualities, the more that group loses its revulsion to those qualities in general and becomes susceptible to the influences of those qualities in its general outlook, and more easily menipulated to act against both its own interest and more general interest of the larger society that group becomes.
This is no accident, but a clearly perceived and ruthlessly pursued stratagy of the right wing.
