An argument against Adam and Eve
#31
RE: An argument against Adam and Eve
Did Adam and Eve actually exist, or was this a story told by desert tribesmen to their children to distract them from the fact that they didn't have air conditioning?
'The difference between a Miracle and a Fact is exactly the difference between a mermaid and seal. It could not be expressed better.'
-- Samuel "Mark Twain" Clemens

"I think that in the discussion of natural problems we ought to begin not with the scriptures, but with experiments, demonstrations, and observations".

- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

"In short, Meyer has shown that his first disastrous book was not a fluke: he is capable of going into any field in which he has no training or research experience and botching it just as badly as he did molecular biology. As I've written before, if you are a complete amateur and don't understand a subject, don't demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect by writing a book about it and proving your ignorance to everyone else! In their defense, it wasn't such a desert at one point. More like a Prairie. I can't make enough comparison to the Midwest.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I think it was because the AC was on the fritz. Gotta entertain and distract from sweat baggin it under hella hot sun, right?

Actually, the creation epic of Adam and Eve was stolen from the Jews by the scribes that manufactured the Christian myth, just like everything that comprises the Christian fable was stolen from some other culture.
Most particularly the Jews stole the creation myth from the ancient Sumerians.

"The Sumerian Epic of Creation and Genesis both have the interesting feature of being scientifically accurate in terms of what was created first. In creating a world, you begin with energy (light), form the planet itself, divide the land from the water, grow grass, herbs, fruit (in that order), initiate day/night and seasons, create fish, fowl, cattle, creeping thing and beasts of the earth (again, in that order), until finally you create man"

Taken from that link...wtf is this guy talking about lol? " grow grass, herbs, fruit (in that order),".....the oldest grass specimen we have dates to roughly the extinction of dinosaurs, not old by any means, and definitely not the first plant. It's always this crazy isn't it?

Grasses themselves were newcomers 65 million years ago, and their most punctuated moments of expansion have occurred since the rise of man. We have been instrumental in their global spread to an estimated 20% vegetative coverage of earth. Fitting, of all food crops grown, 70% are grasses, three of which (rice, wheat, and maize) provide more than 50% of all calories consumed by human beings. Cereal grains are the major contributor of carbohydrates to our diet, and it has also been argued that they are the single greatest source of protein. And then we have Sugarcane..need I say more?

This point may have been more valid if it stated that "(Man) grew grasses, herbs, and fruit (in that order)" Indeed I would argue that this is exactly the narrative that the author is trying to convey, by means of a literary device called "God"

The creation story wasn't new, it was heavily borrowed from the many other traditions of the time. The Jewish take on this deity was unique. I don't believe that Adam and Eve existed. I believe it to be a story.

Is there a way to tell what's meant to be just a story in the bible and what's meant to be real?

Yes, the story begins when you open the book, and ends when you close the book. Everything outside of the book....is real. The binders serve as a boundary that describes the sort of tool you're looking for.

Phytoliths, have been dated to 65 million years ago. So unless "modern man" dates back to around that era...

Please don't become a Christian Ace we have enough crazy literalists Wink

(and that's what Rhythm argues against. It's easy mocking fools)

How the hell am I to know? You Christians don't all agree with each other. Some believe in an Adam and Eve. Some don't. I don't know what 'kind' of Christian you are, I don't know what parts of the bible you think are real or not. You think I'm psychic?!. True I don't know everything about frodo-christianity. Nor do I know everything about tacka-anity.
Was just raising a question on the whole Adam and Eve bullshit.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Looking back at my post, I did mention that the earliest grasses we have dated to 65 million years ago. While grasses developed then, the ones we have now have a lot to do with whether or not the grass could exploit some niche created by man. Grasses that were good as animal feed were spread, grasses that were good as human feed spread, grasses that take advantage of fire benefited greatly from the controlled burns of ag, livestock, and building projects. I'm not sure what disagreement you have about my post?
