Rangers will honor late fan with ballpark statue

The Texas Rangers will honor firefighter Shannon Stone, who was killed at the park earlier this year, with a bronze statue that should be in place for the 2012 season.

The statue, which will also feature Stone's six-year old son Cooper, is tentatively titled Rangers Fans and will likely be on display by the home-plate entrance at Rangers Ballpark.

"We feel that this statue will be a most fitting tribute," Rangers president Nolan Ryan said. "It will not only serve to honor Mr. Stone's memory but also recognize Rangers fans and baseball fans everywhere. I have discussed the project with Jenny Stone, and she and the Stone family will be involved in the design and creation of the statue."

Americans have a fascination with honoring people who suffer severe accidents and misadventures, usually through fault of their own.

It is the same culture that also would rather watch what some celebrity is eating for breakfast instead of caring about revolutions in some forsaken land outside of the mythical borders of Jesusland... I mean America.

Back when I was working, at lunch we'd all sit around reading the paper and we had a sort of unofficial "Stupidest Ways To Die" contest. (This was long before the Darwin Awards.)

For the longest time the champion was some jackass sky-diving instructor who forgot to put his parachute on BEFORE jumping out of the plane. I don't know that Mr. Baseball would have beaten him out but he sure as shit would have been an "Honorable Mention."
