Sucks, I say.  Sucks.  Piss-poor subject matter!

Yep, that's overboard.

But something tells me there was more than just gospel music.

@OP

Yeah, that seems like a pretty big waste of valuable time.

Your argument is invalid.

Really, by the standards of Christian worship music, Gospel music is actually pretty listenable. I could actually put some other artists here, like Mahalia Jackson or the Blind Boys of Alabama or Aretha Franklin's forays into Gospel Music, or other artists like Sixpence none the Richer (a CCM group which wound up making it big with some vaguely sapphic music) and Nick Cave (who, at least in his heyday, was a devout Christian who just happened to sing some brutal songs), or Johnny Cash's or Elvis' requisite gospel tracks or The Pixies, who aren't really religious, but are obsessed with the more fucked up stuff in the Old Testament, but we have a 3-video per post limit.

You can sing a song about dog shit but it remains dog shit.

So, I guess it is now OK to feature religion in the public schools as long as it is about MLK? These events set legal precedents if left unchallenged.

But if it's a good song, it doesn't matter what it's ultimately about. It remains a good song. Aretha Franklin's "Climbing Higher Mountains" is one of my favorite tunes ever. Everything that woman touches becomes gold. Plus that, to me, the song merely uses religious symbolism to talk about real-life things. In this case, difficulties and tribulations--something everybody has, regardless of their religion. A lyrical song is just a poem put to music. Any one poem can be interpreted in a number of ways.

If you pass up rocking to gospel music because you're an atheist, you're missing out.

I don't not like gospel music due to my atheism, I don't like it because I don't like how it sounds.

That's right. These ignorant fuckwads are complaining that a civic event honoring the greatest American civil rights leader in modern history, Martin Luther King Jr., a Doctor of Theology and Baptist Minister, included...shock and horror...Gospel music!
You may think of me as an atheist douche but I prefer to think of myself as an atheist enema.
