I think it's interesting to ponder how consciousness might have come about in the evolutionary process. Why would consciousness be selected for? It's a good question.

Consciousness according to yoga is the very origin of life.
It is the beginning and the end of evolution.
Actually before evolution started there is de-evolution but this topic may go outside the thread itself so let us stick to evolution only unless you wish to elaborate.

Quote:Would you agree that a bacterium has little or nothing of what we would call consciousness? Consider simple, single-celled organisms. There's no reason to think they are any more conscious than any one of our particular cells, right?

Consciousness in a bacterium is not expressed as much as in more evolved form of lives like in animals or humans but nevertheless is there.
Even grass which has a much lower form of expression is still conscious.

Quote:What I'm saying is: evolution does involve consciousness; that's obvious. Whether consciousness is rooted in materialism or not is a debate we can put aside now.

You seem to be suggesting that the "goal" of evolution is consciousness, but if that were true, why would we have variant levels of consciousness in the organisms that currently inhabit the planet? Wouldn't everything become more conscious? After all, we tend to think of an amoeba as a simple organism, but it is as much an evolved organism as any human being. Why isn't every form of life conscious since every other form of life has had as much time to develop consciousness as we have?

To me, the answer is simple: consciousness was selected for in humans and other vertebrates. It serves no purpose for simple life forms and therefore was not selected for.

Interesting question Vul unfortunately you can not understand how the system works.

To understand this point you should understand how the creation or de-evolution works but because atheists do not believe in creation then it will be impossible for you to understand.
Suppose however that you believe in creation which by the way is all about the de-evolution that I was mentioning above.
Unlike what some religions say the universe was not created at one stage in time but is constantly created and fed with new energy 24/7 for ever so what was started billions years ago will reach the peak of evolution before what was created later in a never stop ceaseless and continuous creation.
So lower form of life are such because they were created long after other more evolved forms of lives were created.
One day these now low form of life will evolve as well and they too will reach the peak of evolution.  Lightbulb

Yeah that will require you to be as ageless as the  god you baselessly  proclaim is their. Too bad all the evidence shows you'll die long before you even get started and in the end you'll be no closer then when you began . You'll just drift around and around forever calling every inch a victory were none has occurred . And if destroying all a person's dogma's (which don't apply to atheism ) then your a failure infinite  times over. Because your dogmas don't need to be destroyed they have  never had any claim to validity to begin with. Just claims claims and more claims as fickle and floundering as a fever dream .

Right, so..yoga.  You're not discussing evolution and have no interest in understanding it.  It's an opportunity, instead, to assert that "consciousness" created all that it is contingent upon.  Babbling about "evolution" ist lipstick on your pig.

What a silly religion.

Yoga is the same as any other religion. You are born sick (unenlightened) and they offer to cure you (enlightenment). If you fail, it's your fault.

UTTER GARBAGE Pol.

How on hell can something abstract as the consciousness can come under the physicality side?
Did anybody ever explained to you about the difference between abstract and material-physical?  Banghead

5. That your understanding is that evolution is driven by a desire to be free only shows how little you understand about evolution.

What are you doing right now mate?

Aren't you here in the forum to learn something?
And doesn't that learning help you in your quest for more knowledge?
And does not the quest for more knowledge make you free from ignorance?
