What's their mission? Bush and Obama were supporting CBP efforts. I can't remember what Bush was doing but Obama was facing a flood of people from Central America as the political situation down there went to shit.
Meanwhile, CBP cannot recruit new agents fast enough to replace the ones who retire/quit. Probably because most of the southern border looks like this:

Isn't the Mexico-US border already the most militarized border between two nations that aren't actually at war on some level or another (no, the DMZ doesn't count since the Korean War is technically at a ceasefire that's been going on for 65 years)?

Just depends on who wants to do something. Defines 'politics' to a tee. Actual merits/demerits of an idea are irrelevant, just depends on who wants to do it.
