The truth is Christian virtue had never been some abstract standard conceived out of nobility of spirit, and next to which real people fall short to various degrees. It was always a tissue depliciously conceived to corral the gullible and empower the unscrupulous and the opportunistic.
It never set out virtue, it merely unscrupulously borrowed the Good name of existing virtues to serve the ends of the most loathsome and disreputable human scum in history, 
Is that a fancy way to say they are lying sacks of shit?

Christianity has been around for 2000 years, what you describe has existed since time immemorial and has nothing to do with "religion" but is a product of human nature which is not at all inherently virtuous, hence the saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely". As an aside, it's hilarious to read true believers' attempts to justify that passage. "Oh, in most versions, it simply causes the adulterous woman's belly to swell and her thigh (genitals) to rot... it doesn't actually cause abortion or a miscarriage." Bwuh...? What the fuck do you think would happen to a fetus if that happened to the person carrying it? The contortions the faithful go into to justify the heinous parts of their religion....
