Welcome from England, Heather. I swear a lot but I'm really very nice apart from that. Sounds like a pretty sucky situation to be in, not feeling like you're able to admit to people around you that you have no belief. Kind of understand the reasons for wanting to just shy away though.

Yeah, well, I have 2 small kiddos (3 and 6) and I figure since I'm 100% surrounded by very Christian folks, I'll keep quiet for their sake. I don't want to be labeled as the crazy Atheist in the community. We live in a very small town and honestly, it is easier to just not mention my opinion but yes, it's frustrating. Hence why I came here! So happy!!!!

Indeed, but everyone has to find their own way. I don't have a problem telling people to shove it, but there are many people who don't handle confrontation well and I definitely understand the need to remain mostly in the closet.

You're right though... a conundrum when you're trying to keep your kid's minds from the contamination.

I try my best. My 6 year old asked me the other day if I believed in God. I said, "no i don't but many people do and each person can decide on their own." For now, that was a good enough answer for her but I know in time, I will have to get into more detail. I really want my kids to decide for themselves. My entire family is Christian as is all of my friends. The school my 6 year old attends (a public school) actually says the Lord's Prayer at PTO meetings... which completely shocked me but since 99% of people around here are Christian, I guess it makes sense that no one disputed it.

If those assholes think for one second that I would utter the words, "Our father who art in Heaven, hollowed be thy name...", at a PUBLIC SCHOOL no less, they've been drinking too much grape juice at the communion table. That's just a whole lot of bull shit right there!
