Been thinking of watching the Sopranos. Only ever saw a handful of episodes when it first aired. Really only remember one episode that was pretty brutal and left a lasting stain on my memory of the show. Might give it a try now tho.
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.

Can it be more brutal than cancer?

Also, I've finally watched that Curb Your Enthusiasm episode where Larry pretends to have Asperger's. It's low on the stereotypes, limited to Larry saying "I'm an Excellent Driver" repeatedly to the car mechanic he was apologising for in an homage to Rain Man (to be honest, I have been known to lampoon Raymond Babbitt on occasion because many higher-functioning people on the spectrum find the fact that he's been the main pop culture representative of the condition for so long annoying), crying autism after he causes a bus crash [something that I do not do unless it is actually directly related to the incident at hand, then again this is Larry we're talking about], and the fact that Larry's love interest's teenage son is a bit snotty [a more matter-of-fact tpne of voice would have worked better]. In a conversation, Larry talks with Jeff about it and Jeff says he'll start telling people Larry has Asperger's. Given Larry's complete lack of a social filter and his apparent blue and orange view of social norms, I would have written into the episode Jeff saying "maybe you do have it." And this leads to an arc like the adoption arc from Season 5, this time, leading to more "disability as an excuse for jerkassery" shenanigans before he realises how much it puts his life into perspective. Then again, I suppose the Fatwa arc of this season might be plenty.

"That time I turned into a slime" is a good anime.

In other news I'm waiting for the season premiere of Supernatural.

A different kind of brutal:

For the most part I can watch cancer story lines - they're sufficiently fake that I don't relate too closely with them.

Ah. Imagine that, someone whose favourite film is A Clockwork Orange and is on the autism spectrum greatly overestimates how desensitized other people are to on-screen violence.

So I take it you thought Walter White's battle with cancer wasn't realistic. Or sufficiently on the sidelines that it wasn't too hard to watch. Or that operations weren't a part of the treatment, if I recall.
