@Alpha.

I don't think I'm going to have much joy with that unfortunately; I've got an account now but can't get it to even download the 32mb installer let alone start the download of the whole thing Sad Then looking that up apparently a lot of people have download issues with this, not to mention that the download size is around 9gb and growing... which would probably take several hours with my internet connection speed, if it worked at all. So as much as I'd like to play this, it's looking less and less likely that I'll be able to Sad But maybe it's possible to get it on disc, and thus not go through the massive download? Anyway, regardless, looking into this has made me consider getting a PS4 though... since it would be nice to play this sort of game on a big screen TV rather than a computer monitor and it's been a long time since I've bought a console. Don't supposed there's any other multiplayer games you'd recommend, but smaller and/or simpler downloads?

Just do like all of the teens do. Dive right in and start playing, hitting all of the buttons to see what they do.

RE: Witcher 3
Okay, well I have downloaded it now... it did indeed take about two hours to download but got there in the end by doing it at night when my download speeds are faster - and it seems to be working, albeit a bit laggy/juddery in the screens I've seen of it so far. I haven't played anything yet, just explored the shop, and control mappings etc. I wish I could follow Joods' advice to you above, but unfortunately that's just not me; I'm not a jump in and experiment kind of person (even though the smartphone/app revolution kind of forced that on me a bit) but rather someone who prefers to read manuals thoroughly first before tentatively dipping my toes into something new... so the complete opposite Wink... but doesn't look like that's going to be possible here.

I'm just not looking forward to being thrust into this thing when I have no idea how to play this sort of game... when I'll be lucky enough at the start to get my character to move let alone shoot or build defensive structures on the flyWink and all the while under the pressure of jumping out of a flying bus, into a world with an encroaching wall of death, and people looking to snipe you the second you hit the ground if not before then. The idea of it reminds me an awful lot of Hunger Games, so from that POV it looks like it could be very interesting and fun to play, once/if I get the hang of it, but the last time I played a game even roughly like this was Goldeneye on the N64, and I sucked at that an' all Wink It's just going to be embarrassing that's all - I may as well have 'Noob' tattooed across my forehead and as soon as I land someone will just walk up to me and shoot me in the head I'm sure, so picking this up could be slow progress I think Wink

Anyway as I said it's a bit juddery on my system so far, and that's not even in the game proper, as well as saying there's problems with my graphics drivers - but them saying they're up to date and the one recommended to replace it not being compatible - so basically I don't think my laptop's realistically going to be up to the job, at least not smoothly. Which is part of why I'm considering getting a PS4 instead to play it on; I'd like to be able to use it on my TV for one thing, rather than my (smaller) laptop screen, as well as thinking it would probably be easier to pick up using a control pad rather than a keyboard... albeit less flexible that way. Or I could get a control pad for the PC... do you use or recommend one?

ETA: I've played my first game now and managed to break down a wall, pick up two weapons, and use the map enough to make sure I stayed inside the eyes of the storms, sprinting across the map with Shift when I was running out of time. So that part was okay, but the frame rate/judderiness was absolutely terrible... unplayable basically... so I couldn't aim whatsoever... so even when I had a guy right in front of me I couldn't get the crosshairs to settle on him in order to take a shot... and that's where I died... right in the middle of one of the later eyes of storms... so right in the middle of someone else's firefights near the end. But I at least tried to fire my guns... I had dual pistols and a shotgun... but they were pretty much random shots in the general direction of other players cos of that aiming thing. From what I've seen though, I think I would indeed like this game, if it was running smoothly, but it's very clear my laptop's not up to the task graphically, so I don't think there's any point holding out for playing it on PC anymore; so realistically it's either buy a console or give up on it... but after all the youtube vids I've seen of it now, I'm pretty addicted to the idea of it, so I think it's likely I will indeed get a console, not sure which though, since all the major ones seem to run this game... but playstation is the one that's leaping out to me at the moment, and probably the cheapest as well.

It depends on the genre you like.

Unfortunately, the console player audience is completely different than the PC player audience, because there is no way to connect to the PC audience via a console. Kind of lame, actually.

One game I found myself liking, however, is Neverwinter. An MMORPG.

Well generally I'm not that much into video gaming any more... so this business with Fortnite is pretty new to me. I used to have a lot of consoles when I was a teenager but I grew out of it, and computer games in general except for a few old classics I couldn't let go of... so haven't really had much experience in today's world of graphically superior/intensive games like these first person shooters. So basically of these new types of games... I have no idea what genres I'd like... but I do like what I've seen of Fortnite so far, so I think it's worth getting a console for. And if that works out I'll be able to branch out into other modern genres... in other words this is long overdue coming out from under the rock I've been living under for so many years, console wise Wink So what's an MMORPG? I get the last part would be role playing game, but I don't know what the first part would be.

Oh right... cool... well in that case, yes I think I'll be getting introduced to that concept... first through Fortnite and also I would guess from the general online nature of most modern consoles; ie in my day they weren't networked like they are now; so that's another new thing I'll have to get used to. Where Fortnite is concerned, I think that MMO aspect is really appealing... ie the thought of it being 100 individuals all fighting tooth and nail for survival, collecting resources, building their own defences and/or hiding out in buildings on the map... is really surreal... but good surreal. I mean I'd much prefer that than it being computer controlled opponents... it just adds character to the whole thing. So from the title of yours I get the feeling it's more of a kind of Zelda type thing... mythical rpg more than action per se? ie perhaps a bit slower/calmer than Fortnite?

Never played Zelda, so I have no way of knowing if that's an accurate comparison.

I only played Neverwinter for a little bit, because online MMOs tend to be P2W (pay to win) even though the game itself is free to play.

Currently, I'm replaying Mass Effect: Andromeda, a third-person shooter RPG, on my PS4 console. It's the only shooter game I can stand, because it's from a third person perspective rather than a first person viewpoint. From what I've seen, Fortnite is also from a third person perspective, but on the console it's called Fortnite Battle Royale even though it's the same game as the PC version. It's free on the console, too. I might check it out.

Well, I haven't played much of Zelda either... but I just meant a kind of mythical/olde worlde type rpg, as opposed to a shootemup.

By third-person, do you mean in the sense that you see your character... as opposed to just seeing out of their eyes, in which case where you'd just see a gun bobbing up and down as you ran or something? If that's what you mean then yeah, Fortnite is third-person; it would need to be in order to see all the skins/'cosmetics' that you can have in the game. And BTW Fortnite specifically states it's not pay-to-win... you can buy skins etc but nothing that can give you actual advantage in the game, so that's pretty cool, and yeah it's Fortnite Battle Royale that's free... on console or PC... but you can also pay for other versions of Fortnite; but the Battle Royale part is the part that's free but it's still a full standalone game. That's what I've just got now for the PC, but just found that my laptop is not up to the challenge of running it smoothly, so the next job is to buy a console, and the plan at the moment is probably to go for a PS4 Slim version... since i've just read on a forum that it can use a mouse and keyboard with Fortnite if you want to; which I'm in two minds about; part of me would prefer the accuracy and assignability of keyboard vs mouse for this, but another part of me would prefer the ease of use of a control pad. So I could just get both and see which feels better. Anyway, if you do get Fortnite... and if I get a PS4... would you fancy playing it together? Alpha has said he'd be happy to play with people from here. I think that would be great fun Smile
