Ah. Makes sense... they're certainly cheaper and you can pick em up anywhere. I just find that the consoles themselves aren't reliable enough for me to commit to that... both my N64 and Mega Drive don't work properly any more...they work sporadically. I don't know what happened to my SNES so every now and then I look on ebay for one and consider getting it, but I have to weigh that against the possibility of it being likewise unreliable. If it weren't for that though, I'd love to get one.. play Mario Kart, Mario All Stars, and Striker again... those were my favourites I think.

You can buy newer versions of the consoles for pretty cheap. If you don't mind doing 5 minutes of work with a screwdriver, you can simply replace the pin connector on your old consoles, too. (If your console powers on but doesn't play games, the pin connector is most likely the issue.) They cost around five bucks and will probably last a lifetime if you only play your Mega Drive on occasion.

Wow... so you actually know how to fix them. The closest I've ever got to fixing them is blowing on the cartridge or in the slot, or with my dad, when I was a kid, cleaning the contacts (or whatever they were) for control pads with methylated spirits... but that still didn't help much... still ended up with about ten partially working control pads Wink

Anyways, the N64 just continually resets... so my theory is that perhaps the reset button got held down in storage and is now semi-stuck down.. or something like that. And the Mega Drive is just very fragile... the slightest touch of it and the screen will freeze. And both of them need a lot of blowing on carts before they work, if they do.

But anyway, thanks for the advice Smile

Try this link. (If anything for the joke about the crucifixion painting. lol!)

It requires zero skill to replace pin connectors... otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it. Google it and follow some schmuck's instructions on YouTube. It's that easy.

If your bored one day, give it a shot. It sounds like your interest in restoring your game systems is lukewarm, but it ain't so bad firing up some childhood memories after you get it working again, so keep it in mind.

Also, if you do decide to buy connectors, go ahead and grab a backup set. I feel good knowing I have an extra set even though the ones inside it are brand new.

Any favorite N64 games?

Big Grin Thanks for that. I'm not sure if that's the solution, because I don't know if I actually have an expansion/jumper pack since I don't remember buying one... but opening the slot there is something in there with the ominous label "do not remove this label"... but I'd say the thing is fifteen, twenty years outside it's warranty so not a problem to do that Wink I just don't know what it is though... it does move when pushed so it may be a default expansion/jumper pack (whatever they actually are) that came with the console... so could try and prise it out at some point. May as well, cos it's not doing much good now. And/or actually take it apart; my dad's a bit like Tim The Tool Man Taylor... I have great faith in his electronics and DIY ability... he knows what he's talking about... but he has fried a few things as well in Tim Taylor fashion, much to our continued family amusement Wink So, he can help me with it Big Grin

As for reviving childhood memories from this, call me sad but I actually just enjoy watching 'longplays' of them on YouTube... so just trying to remember the games I used to play for one thing then looking them up on YouTube... and surprisingly they're almost always there, and played in full. That's was my compromise for the consoles not working, and was just as good for the nostalgia Smile

As fir the N64, I'd say my absolute favourite game on that, without a shadow if doubt, is F-Zero X. I have played (and seen on YouTube) the GameCube version that followed it, and though faster it's just not the same; the biggest thrill with F-Zero X for me was the explosions, especially several at once... when for instance, you'd spin attack into a densely packed group and take out many ships at once... whereas with the GameCube version though it (I think) has the same attacks, you never see those results of them in that way, so it just became like a normal racing game.

If you're still curious about this, my recommendation would be to build or buy a Retropie. I have one with about 10000 games from various systems and paid about $100 for it. Works great and you can run Kodi on it as well. The thing with retro gaming is the controls feel derpy because they're not as responsive and fluid as modern games. But still great for the nostalgia effect though,

Is it $100 to build or to buy? I can handle classic controllers, no problem. So long as the emu system is just as responsive as the original console, it won't bother me.

You can buy them loaded for around $100. You can build one yourself for around $50-60, but then you have to load all the ROMs on it too.  You can buy SD cards with around 10K Roms on for around $20.  I hope it's okay to link this, but this is the same seller on Ebay who I bought mine from.  I sent the guy a message before I purchased it, and he was nice enough to use a different case color and added about 7500 ROMs on it for free.   It came with two classic SNES controllers.  He has various listings, but that should at least get you heading in the right direction with it.  They're pretty nifty if you just want to play the older Atari/Nintendo/Sega games, but there are also some games from other systems like NeoGeo and Turbo-Grafx-16.  Some I couldn't tell what they were from because they're listed as MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator).  Everything is also alphabetized and mine came with Kodi installed.

I wish I could use the classic NES controllers. I can use the Atari 2600 controllers because it's just a stick with one button, so I bought a multi-play Atari 2600 retro gaming station, but it suffered from a lack of good single player games. I played quite a bit of Asteroids though.

Pretty much most of the games done by Rare such as Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie. The best games for completionism lovers like me.
