I've seen pictures of dead rhinos with their horns cut off.
A big magnificent animal, such a senseless waste, it's heartbreaking.
I happen to find the poacher's death, considering his family, also heartbreaking.
I'm not comfortable with people considering it a victory for the rhino.
You are all entitled to your own opinion, as am I, and I agree to disagree.
That's all I'm going to say about it.

What interests me about this is the behavior of the elephant. The lions will scavenge an easy meal, no surprise there, but why did the elephant kill him? Was it because the poacher killed the rhino?

My bet is the elephant was in must. (It was a male?) Second choice would be they've learned that humans aren't all that good for anything around there.

They're very smart. They've been known to go on revenge killing sprees,. Knowing that elephants will revenge kill without targeting the actual poacher..why don't they kill humans on sight.

Maybe they distinguish between dangerous and harmless humans? Or at least have an opinion about whether a given human is a threat that needs to be put down?

It's strange either way, because in the case of revenge incidents they don;t seem to be able to distinguish between the offending party an the nearest village..or, if they do, don't give a shit.
I say strange only in that it's not what we'd consider common for an animal, not that it would be strange if we afforded them consideration as something like our cognitive peers.
I think that if I saw some guy mutilating cattle for one of their horns out in an open field next to my house I;d have some misgivings about his presence. If those same people also hunted people..misgivings would become something else.
