What is next for the United States?

Can we please discuss what your thoughts are on what this means for the future of the United States.

If the republitraitors get their way, the increasing schism between the religious right and the 2nd amendment people and the neo-nazis on their side and the rational people opposing them will lead to a break up of the republic, like all empires rotting from the core.

In the immediate term, states like Alabama and Georgia are trading viability for ideological, theological and dictatorial purity. They'll see their best and brightest leave, their innovators leave and their enterprises leave. They'll find themselves increasingly dependant on handouts from states who actually give a damn about their citizens (hence why I said what I said above).

Conservative judges tend to respect precedence. He said he would. Who knows.

Conservatives only respect precedence when it is to their advantage or it leads to their desired outcomes. The rapist in robes will destroy Roe v Wade given half the chance.

And again, banning abortion doesn't work. Communist dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu forbade abortion and look how it worked for him and Romania.

But what can you do? People are completely braindead and clap Trump's speeches for fuck sake.
Yep. But you will be surprised how fast religion can make you forget. People in Romania are already starting to have Life March's (it was a scandalul because they took kids from high schools and school classes to this fucking March) although thousands of women died because of that fucking abortion ban law, a law that was in force just 30 years ago.

As for the future of America: I'm actually not worried... (though maybe I should be). I think the Supreme Court will overturn this shit as fast as it lands on their desk.

You really think so? Even with Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court?

I expect Chief Justice Roberts would side with the liberal judges. He's crossed the aisle before.

Idea: The Republican Party exachanges their elephantine symbol for something more fitting: The Scorpion!

I find it a lil funny that it seems most people in favor of this bill think abortion laws will work, but better gun control won’t.

I wonder if they plan to ban coat hangers.

There was a piece in the New York Times over ten years ago explaining exactly what things were like Pre-Roe, abortion-wise. This includes not only coat-hangers, but " darning needles, crochet hooks, cut-glass salt shakers, soda bottles, sometimes intact, sometimes with the top broken off."

At one point, he describes something so disturbing I'll leave it under hide:

If you were brave enough to show that content, remember: this is the world the Pro-Lifers will get if they have their way; a woman whose illegal abortion was so badly botched she got disemboweled.

His conclusion:

Quote:It is important to remember that Roe v. Wade did not mean that abortions could be performed. They have always been done, dating from ancient Greek days.

What Roe said was that ending a pregnancy could be carried out by medical personnel, in a medically accepted setting, thus conferring on women, finally, the full rights of first-class citizens — and freeing their doctors to treat them as such.

And as a result, having an abortion is somewhere in the ballpark of ten times less likely to kill a woman than giving birth (which is still pretty negligible), and it's all because we have people who know what they're doing in charge.
