I loved the song back then, and still do now. But if the intent was to rail against blind authoritarianism, I get that, but somehow I can see too many listening to that song and jumping to anarchy. There is something to be said about fighting abuse of authority, but that should not come at the cost of devaluing education.

The problem with "Brick In The Wall"...

People cherry-pick ideas. The exploitation gets missed by most people. "Just another rock-and-roll burn out."
I can identify somewhat with the song.
In college, after a lifetime of being bullied, and self loathing I slowly found out, while some of my professors were correct about what they were teaching me, outside class, they shit, peed and farted just like I did. I found out one of my professors had a very messy disorganized office. Another one was a fundy, whom after class once asked me if I needed Jesus. That pissed me off. I simply have a problem with the implication of "all or nothing" motif of the song. One should fight blind loyalty, but one can also value education while fighting blind loyalty.

And I don't see the song as devaluing education. I see it as objecting to learning by rote and stifling creativity. Boru

Just listen to the album in full, read this analysis website for context. And maybe read some of Roald Dahl’s books, specifically Boy and maybe some of his other novels with Public School scenes (Danny, Champion of the World or Matilda.) That’s the sort of shit Roger Waters had to deal with as a kid.

Learning through authoritarianism is just rule by fear, which stifles the creativity the song points out. Notice the teacher mocking the poet in the song? |
