If your wife truly loves you she will eventually accept your atheism.

To sum it up she is very upset and she can't understand why I have become an atheist and I don't feel I can fully explain why I have without seeming to attack her belief even if that's not my intention. Just so you know, "atheist" isn't about rejecting the claims of just the Christian God. She is an atheist to claims of Thor and Isis and Apollo herself. You just reject one god claim more than she does. BTY, you don't "become" anything. You simply ditch one position for another. If you like eating at a restaurant you are not the restaurant itself. If you get tired of eating there, again, you are not the restaurant. You didn't "become" anything. You simply thought about the claims over time and didn't find them logical. Just like if you eat food you think is good for you and suddenly find out it is crap. 
Hey OP - I feel you. I was a believer most of my life and recently told my family (parents, brother) I'm an atheist, and they didn't take it well as they're all strong believers. Our situations aren't exactly the same here - I'm lucky that my partner is an atheist, so I have his full support. But I know it's a tough adjustment for the people you love. My family hasn't disowned me or anything; we're all still on good terms. It's just a little awkward. We're all uncertain about how to act or what to say (and not say). And my folks think God will reveal himself to me and I'll be Christian again so that's sort of a weird vibe. I know all of that will get better with some time, but it's still hard here and now.
All of that to say: you're not alone being a relatively new atheist among religious loved ones. If you guys keep communications open, honest, and loving, I think it's very likely you can make it through together, as long as that's what both of you want. I read a book that helped me a lot. It's called Mom, Dad, I'm an Atheist by David G McAfee. Would highly recommend. Best of luck!
