I think Jeff Goldblum was into something with that line in Jurassic Park movie. I read the book "selfish gene" by Richard Dawkins. And it came more across as dogmatic than fact. With the idea that humans are just genetic machines. Didnt make that much sense to me. Although he coined the term meme is something i think was a clever idea.

I don't know about life, but trolls don't find a way, and die.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
At work.

Life is matter.
Matter is everywhere in the universe. The real question should be: Does the universe try to assemble its stardust to reach its objective. ie: intelligent consciousness! Sadly, no. The universe itself it unconscious and couldn't give 2 poops. Enter old bloke with beard .... Don't we all love a nice happy ending I know I do. Tell me another one gramps!
