Because you cited a verse which stated that two people would die if they ate from the Tree as a basis for human immortality. You then stated that ‘die’ doesn’t really mean ‘die’ at all. This means human mortality wasn’t affected by eating the fruit. QED.

Death simply means 'separation', in this case it means separation from God. Sin cannot enter the presence of God, hence "The soul that sinneth, it shall die."- Ezekiel 18:20 or in other words be cut off from the presence of God. An atonement had to be made for sin in order for man to once again enter the presence of God.

Genesis 4:16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Q. What atonement for sin did Cain make to get into the presence of God, before he killed Abel and went out from the presence of God as documented here?
