I thought the flashbacks were his premonition, actual flashforwards of potential timelines.... the trouble is that there are infinite such potentials and he does become "a bit" overwhelmed by them.

I thought that's what I said. Right now I'm reading about Jamis' funerary and Paul sees an infinity of possibilities and a narrow line to a non-Jihad culmination.
