I would not trust Barack Obama with such power. Can you imagine any of the piles of shit running for the GOP nomination having it?

Bush "re-interpreted" the law to allow torture. Lawyers are whores, Shel. You can always pay one to do what you want done.

Another thing I completely agree on. I'm not saying I like the idea at all. I wouldn't trust any person to decide who gets the rights we enjoy and who doesn't. It's all or none, in my opinion. I'm simply sick of hearing idiots rave on and on, living in legitimate fear, simply because they didn't read past a headline. Sure, there is reason to fear such a thing from happening. However, it is not what they think it is.

Someone once said when fascism comes to America, it will be carrying a Bible and wrapped in a flag.

The part about "wearing a tricorner hat" came as a surprise.

As fucked up as that is, I've been reading all of these ridiculous diatribes about it that miss the mark completely. It involves traitors and enemies of the U.S. That means it has absolutely nothing to do with an average citizen.tairs/

(1)'Traitor' is a catch-a term,like 'un-American'.

(2) um,exactly how do you determine who is and is not a traitor without a trial and conviction?

(3)What the fuck gives the US the right to afford others less legal protection than its own citizens? (Australia does it too, with refugees, and it's shameful.)

The notion of "well I'b better not be traitor" is right up there with "you'll talk to the police if you have nothing to hide"

The hysteria comes from those who think draconian laws are necessary and think it's just dandy to give the give the government more, not less power. No government can be trusted implicitly. That's why there are legal and constitutional checks and balances; to keep the bastards honest-is.

IF you've never seen it, I urge you to watch the video below "Don't talk to the police" or "In praise of the Fifth amendment" ,by an professor James Duane.

from Wiki:

Quote:James Duane is a Regent University School of Law professor, former criminal defense attorney, and Fifth Amendment expert.[1] He received some notoriety for his "Don't Talk To Police" video of a lecture he gave to a group of law students, which instructs citizens to never talk to police under any circumstances. After gaining mild popularity on sites such as YouTube and Google, his lecture received criticism from a blogger on the neoconservative website, The Weekly Standard.[2][3]
In support of his "Don't Talk to Police" mantra, Duane cites, among other things that: 1) police have the ability to lie to criminal suspects during questioning, and sometimes employ this tactic; 2) police may have substantial evidence against even innocent witnesses and; 3) individuals convinced of their own innocence may have unknowingly committed a crime which the inadvertently confess to during questioning.[4] This follows the reasoning of Justice Robert Jackson in Watts v. Indiana.
He has also written about what he views to be bizarre legislative drafting errors in the Virginia Statute on Privileged Marital Communications[5] as well as issues involving the introduction of hearsay evidence at trial (known as "bootstrapping").[6]

Exactly. "Come with us. We suspect you're a terrorist."

"What? I just run a liberal blog. I've always called for non-violent protest. I've never threatened anyone in my life. What is the charge based on?"

"I dunno. Someone just accused you of being a terrorist. Now get in that cell." *slam*

"Um, I get to have a trial to prove my innocence, right? ...right? ...Hello?"

Quote:(3)What the fuck gives the US the right to afford others less legal protection than its own citizens? (Australia does it too, with refugees, and it's shameful.)

Actually, our constitution protects all people of the world, citizen or otherwise. It specifies "no person shall be held without due process." "PERSON" not "citizen".

Of course, the constitution is just a piece of paper if no one will fight to protect it and enforce it.

The irony is, Pad, that the hysteria comes from the same bunch of republico-libertarianeo-conazi fuckheads who don't want the government regulating "business" but think its fine for them to toss anyone they don't like in jail.

Pad, I don't agree with the law. I think it is a stupid law. I also think it is stupid for people to call a pot a frying pan. I can find it ridiculous that people do not actually read what they are bitching about while still being against what they are bitching about, for more informed reasons. I already stated that the language is too ambiguous and I already stated that I am not for it . . . at all. That doesn't mean I am all for blind ignorance, as long as it happens to be tilted in my favor at the moment.

All these laws of this type, and TSA, and other agency's, are for the control of the US people, not terrorists.
It will be to quell dissent in the American population. Which has already started.
To stop a revolution before it can start.

Just came across this old information film that all Americans living today need to watch:

First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
They they came for the Social Democrats, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a social democrat.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.
