What has Christianity truly contributed to humanity
|
35,000 sects of Christianity. Pretty damn big family there.
Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. - Joseph Campbell

What? Lol. I don't even care about this topic all that much but this is an absurd response. I imagine a historian has better ground to stand on for his history opinion than Trump does for his electoral opinion.
It descends on which “historian”.

Christophilic authors are well known experts in human dignity and existential inequality. Just a quick wiki, and I see yet another example of exactly what I'm talking about. The guy says to himself, I'm not roman or greek at all, I'm thoroughly christian, as though christianity didn't suckle on the greco roman tit. He means this nominally, as an atheist....ofc. Whatever, people identify however they like, but I find that I'm not greco roman or christian...at all...and the christians I see around me aren't any of those things either. So there's that.
Ultimately, that's the rosetta stone to any such claim. If we include nominal christians who might also happen to be atheists and thus everything anyone has ever done in any society or group that so much as calls themselves christian regardless of whether or not they even believe in a god..then..maybe..we can posit that christianity did...something.....?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. St. Basil of Caesarea did found the first public hospital that I'm aware of that would be comparison to today's hospitals. Later, Charlemagne decreed that every cathedral should have a school, monastery and hospital attached. While I concede that a place to heal the sick wasn't invented by Christians. I don't see how any reasonable person could argue against Christian positive influence to spread public hospitalization. To your other question @Helios I wasn't claiming religion as the source of anything, that's not a Christian stance. The things I listed were areas Christians, the "church", or religious dictums contributed to bettering society, as was the original question. I'm also not denying the division and two-faced ness of the "church". The question wasn't "do the scales balance?" it was "has it done anything worth anything?" Knowing that this is a poke thread though, more than likely, it is just a place for anti-theists to vent. I have no problem entertaining actual discussions but it has to be in the vein of the OP. If you want a bag on the church thread, I'm certain there are tons of other places and threads here on that.

It's easy to argue that christianity hasn't been a positive influence in healthcare, it remains committed to denying healthcare to this very day.
The christian scientists have some weird thing against tamiflu, jws think blood transfusions are icky, the cathlicks don't like bortin babbies and the fundies think people should suffer with the mental health god "gifted" them. OFC, the main consumers of each and every service are, by sheer force of demographics, christian. Nominal or otherwise. The desire or existential need to corner an intentionally limited market cannot credibly be confused with any beneficent religious motivation to the betterment of humanity. Insomuch as christianity ever stumbled into doing anything right by accident, it set out to do the thing for wholly degenerate reasons, and topped it off by lying about what they did, what others did, and..now..where they even got the idea. Holy...holy...holy.

I argue that their self-identity classifies them as Christian, and as such, within their field they have contributed to society. I don't think you can separate the who they claim from the who they are. Not that it matters. In some way part of who they are is/was Christian. Their Christianity may have zero bearing on their scientific contribution, but it can't be divorced from who they are. Therefore it meets the definition of Christian contribution. I have higher standards for determining that a person did the right thing, rather then failing at doing the wrong thing and ending up helping on accident....on the rare occasion they even managed that much.
I'll just point out, again, that you're going to be doomed to polishing a turd. When you're done, it will still be a turd. Obvioously, christian people are people, it's not surprising to see them try to improve their lot in life..in spite of, and not because of, their christianity. That is the story of christian schism after all.
