Smoking

RE: Smoking
What a bunch of tosh ... lots of things are prohibited (even if the prohibition is one of limits) but mainly drugs I suppose, things that are deemed to be so dangerous they might kill you.

Why should tobacco (and alcohol) be any different?

Anyway Luke, you kinda sidestepped the fact that it was a personal opinion ... feel the force Luke Wink

RE: Smoking
I think people should be able to make their own choices. Sure, smoking is bad for you in a lot of ways, but so is eating fast food and riding bicycles. I think any free person would have the right to engage in these activities, provided they aren't harming others.

Prohibition of such things as tobacco and alcohol wouldn't solve a thing. People who want to use them will get them, and it'll only be more dangerous under the black market.

Let people smoke and drink themselves into oblivion, but don't let them take us down with them. I'm in favour of the current laws.

RE: Smoking
I have never smoked. Not one cigarette. Don't know why I'd start. I' was never pressured really, but I'm not the type to ever give in anyway. I never go long with what others do. I'm quite happy not 'being cool'. Cos I find most people who just all stick together and 'go along with the ride', etc, etc - to be fools. Why would I want to model myself on people like that?

...Actually in early 2007 I was asked several times over a few weeks if I wanted a cigarette to 'help me relax'. But it was just an obvious "No" to me.

What I find curious is why so many people give in to peer pressure and start in the first place (Why would you want to...isn't it simply peer pressure)? It's obviously common behavior (smoking is pretty common!) - but I just can't relate to it myself whatsoever!

Absolutely; there is limit to which a government can or should protect people from the results of their self destructive behaviour..-----So long as their choices don't harm others or cost society billions of dollars.Imo smoking is a massive social evil. The illegal drug problem is a political issue, not a health issue..

My state has some of the toughest anti smoking laws in the world, which are about to get tougher. The Adelaide city council is introducing by laws which will make it an offence to smoke ANYWHERE within certain areas such as Rundle Mall.(the major shopping centre in the city) I support the laws completely.

I also support our seat belt legislation. On a personal level because I've had my life saved by a seat belt.On pragmatic level, out of consideration for the para medics; so they don't have to waste time looking for the bodies which are more likely to still be intact rather than in pieces..

RE: Smoking
The anti-smoking campaigns are definetely annoying but at the same time they are legit so I am not against them really.

As a smoker, I must say that I miss being able to smoke in the restaurants. I always loved having or cigarette or two before my meal, and definetely afterwords! Also, I have lived in two places in my life both with extreme climates.. Québec, where it is freezing cold in the winter, and Texas, where it is burning hot in the summer. It was nice to smoke inside a restaurant!

But I'm not against banning smoking in restaurants. I mean, as a kid it always bugged me so I'm sure it bugs non smokers to come into a cloud of smoke to get their food!

I AM however against them banning smoking in bars. It seems to me that a good percent of the people in bars smoke and it's not a place for kids anyways.

Also, many big clubs... there have been times when I have went to a club and then had to go outside to smoke, and then have to wait in a long line to get back in! They should at least have "smoking rooms" or something like they do at airports!

Remind me, how long has this "war on drugs" been going on? We prohibited it; big deal. It still goes on! Like I said, prohibition solves nothing. If there is a demand (and there is) then there will be a supply somewhere, legal or not.

RE: Smoking
Prohibiting smoking is not a solution, even increasing cigarettes prices doesn't work, for example in my country since cigarettes get more and more expensive the black market is flourishing: a carton of cigarettes bought from the black market is about 30% cheaper than one bought from a store and I'm talking about the same brand.
Personally, it's not God I dislike, it's his fan club I can't stand.
