So what do you think should done with ... people ... who come into such communities with the sole intent of being utter assholes?

First of all if I were to see banning as necessary I would probably ban the people that think anyone who thinks different than they do are utter assholes first. Being an asshole is human nature. So, in a theist forum I would, if forced by popular demand, to ban atheists just for being atheists I would ban the theists instead.

If someone is an utter asshole ignore them or play along with them which makes you an asshole as well. Be honest and fair about that. If it disrupts the forum, and I mean it really disrupts the forum, I don't mean it gets the atheists or theists panties in a bind because they're fucking idiots, then warn, temporarily ban, etc. Eventually, if someone keeps coming back and doing the same thing you may have to get rid of them.

I personally tend to recoil from political correctness or phony "Christian" niceties more than assholery.

Since I don't know the context here, I am in no position to judge the moderation of this forum. 

But I would be surprised if an atheist forum was so readily banning religious visitors (in a biased manner), you know how many debate-hungry atheists are on Reddit? Just go make a post on r/debateanatheist and you will see what I'm talking about. There is no shortage of atheists to argue with on Reddit if you are seeking that. A bunch of debate-bros.

I loath organized religion [1] but I think I loath politics just as much. A lot of what I see wrong with organized religion is political. Atheists often accuse me of being anti-science, but I'm not at all. I'm anti-corruption. Religion, politics and science are devastatingly corrupted.  The only solution, temporarily and as much is possible to solve mankind's problems (only Jehovah can do that completely) would be to get rid of money. Get rid of the financial incentive to corrupt.

God won't do anything about mankind's problems.

Why should he? He caused them and is probably proud of his work.

Bloody hell, Reddit is the worst! They will shadow ban you or ban you even if you're atheist for disagreeing with anything they say. If you disagree on which brand of ketchup is the best they will swiftly boot you. I was never banned there because I got out before that could happen. All about silencing debate and free speech over there. Dregs of society.
