The current economic forms are unlikely to survive, but they’ll be replaced by something else (and it won’t be pretty).

Midwestern droughts have reduced the flow of the Mississippi. Groundwater depletion has caused coastal land to sink below sea level. Sea-temperature increases raised the sea level in the Gulf. The result: rising ocean waters are out-competing the Mississippi flow, pushing up the riverbed, and will reach New Orleans’ water treatment plant. The city’s water supply will be undrinkable, while the salt leaches poisons out of lead pipes. They have one month.

And China is ramping up its Nuclear Arsenal Program.
 
So the current economic system is already ugly enough. And there is nothing uglier.
 
Because: We have what it takes to make the necessary energy transition in 5-10 years. We know that our economic models will have to be replaced with something better. But we are unable to do it. The price for one artillery shell that is being fired by both sides in Ukraine is 1000 $. And both sides are unable to meet their needs for more artillery shells in this war.

The us is sending things that have negative book values. It's not even because we're spending our money on conflict that we don't address climate change. We could do both. Will have to do both. There isn't a single petrostate in the world that doesn't have a compelling interest in bettering their situations before the profit tap dries up.

I’m not an absolute pacifist who believes that the military is not important. The world in which we live has its realities therefore we must have people who are specialized in protecting us.

So I am also going to mention the AI spending of major power. The US is investing 50 Billion into these technologies. China invests 15 Billions. Germany alone is 4 Billions and the EU is something close to 10 Billion.

And there are serious meetings and legal arrangements to try to make these technologies “safe” for us. It’s all about safety right?  
 
And that’s what we are talking about when we talk about climate change. Selfish approaches like the vaccine hoarding policies during the pandemic will create more problem than they solve.
 
So if we invest all into AI + the military, we may end up like Israel. Just one country in the middle of a dozen of would-be states. SO how do you exist in a place like that?
 
The same works for climate change. Climate change is destabilizing the world already. I’m thinking for instance of the Russian implantation in the Sahel region. All the “democracies” of that region are gradually becoming pure dictatorships who are Russia/Wagner Friendly so the French military presence in the region has almost completely disappeared. In a way that western journalists are not even able to enter the region anymore because there is no safety left for them there.

So that’s just one example. Security means, creating a secure world. So climate change + other ecological issues must be treated as issues of national security.
