Quote:TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The former Florida lawmaker who sponsored the controversial law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” was sentenced to six months in federal prison Thursday for defrauding a federal coronavirus relief loan program for small businesses.
Former state Rep. Joe Harding, a 36-year-old Republican, resigned in December after being charged with fraudulently obtaining more than $150,000 from the Small Business Administration in pandemic aid loans. He pleaded guilty in March to wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements in connection with COVID-19 relief fraud.
“The theft of any amount of taxpayer funds is inexcusable,” said U.S. Attorney Jason Coody in a news release. “However, the defendant’s deceptive acts of diverting emergency financial assistance from small businesses during the pandemic is simply beyond the pale.”

The House could have a Speaker by tomorrow. The fact that the Speaker is chosen by a majority of those present and voting is a House procedural rule, it’s not in your Constitution. If this rule is changed to allow the election by a plurality, Hakeem Jeffries would be the new Speaker.
Alternatively, if just a handful of Republicans were suddenly struck with a mysterious illness which prevented them from being there for the vote, Jeffries would win again.

The democrats are like that Michael Jackson popcorn meme while the gop shows its ridiculousness. They could choose to back a GOP candidate just to stick a finger in the eye of the clowns in the gop, but they reap no advantage. The clowns on the far, far right refuse to collaborate with democrats. Let em burn it down, say the democrats. It's nihilism on both sides.
I'm not sure rank and file republicans even care about the speakership. No meaningful legislation has come from the GOP in at least 3 congressional cycles. They just want to see memes and soundbites that own the libs. The gop base is anything but sophisticated.

i don’t think the democrats are being nihilistic at all. they are just being mindful of Napoleon’s advice to not interrupt the enemies when the enemy is making mistakes. the notion that some collaboration can paper over the chasm and restore the american politics to a more functional appearance is a pipe dream that could at best only slightly postpone the reckoning at the expense of diminishing the probability that the outcome of the reckoning would represent an improvement over what came just before the reckoning.

For the record, they did change the rules to a plurality vote twice: in 1849 and 1856.
And at times, it's tempting to imagine the Dems telling the Republicans who've kept blocking Jordan's election something like "Hey, since you're clearly not going anywhere in this election, here's an idea: if you actually want ANYTHING to get done, vote for Hakeem Jeffries." It's a long shot, and I suspect that it would have to take shit getting really fucking bad for anyone to consider this, but it's possible.

What's going to happen is the GOP will keep dicking around until November when the existing CR runs out, and the government shuts down, and all those big military vendors like Raytheon and Northrup Grumman who were counting on contracts to renew supplies going to Israel and Ukraine are shit out of luck until it gets fixed. They, in turn, will tell the Republicans whose campaign war chests get their kickbacks that they are also shit of luck until it gets fixed. Only then will the GOP work with Dems to stand up an interim Speaker.

If we're dreaming, instead of "struck by mysterious illness", "mauled by bears" has a nice ring.
