Roe v. Wade is gone.

I know this is going to be a bit of an unpopular take here, but there's a part of me that's glad that RvW got overturned.

I mean, yeah, absolutely, I support a women's right to choose and I'm pro-choice and everything but.... democrats FINALLY have an issue that is a proven winner for them to use in elections. They finally have the base riled up. And they're finally done pretending that republicans are going to play fair.

With all the stunts Moscow Mitch has played with filibuster and judge appointments, voter suppression, and regular threats of government shutdowns, the GOP has pretty much gotten everything they want since 2003 or so. This is despite the fact that they haven't won the popular vote in a presidential election since 2004 (and that was only with extreme rally-around-the-flag post 9/11). Before that? They won the popular vote in 1988.

So, maybe now that democrats can win a few more elections and maybe now that they've realized republicans refuse to play fair, I can only hope they'll do something about their stunts. As much as I'm pro-choice, I'm willing to sacrifice roe v wade for a few years if it means we can reign in a republican party that is foaming at the mouth.

I'm not sure about that. I think part of the principles which liberals embrace is a dedication to fairness, even in the face of unfairness. It's because that's the world we want to live in. We'd rather live in a world where people are fair and kind and do the right thing, so we don't want to help the world become otherwise by not being fair and kind ourselves. Even if it leaves us vulnerable. Our vulnerability is the price we pay to live in a better world.

I mean, yeah, I would like to live in a world with more fairness, but if your opponent is blatantly using unfair tactics to beat you, over and over again, you have to change.  Because if you're the only ones who value fairness, when you're squashed into irrelevance, fairness gets squashed right along with you.  Fair or unfair, in a republican government, your party has to win elections or you can't do anything.  

Now, if I had to choose, obviously, we would win with fair methods, but we've been trying that for years and the first time we got anywhere was when we let them win and it's going to take a long time to repair the damage they've done.  Right now, my biggest fear is that dems will hurry and fix the surface damage that's been done without even considering the long term effects or the foundational flaws that allowed these stunts to happen in the first place.  

So, yeah, I do want democrats to fix roe v wade and I'm confident that ruling is going to change again, but first they need to take steps to prevent some of the stunts McConnell pulled with the supreme court justices and do something about the filibuster and maybe deal with the electoral college.  Because if we don't fix the rest of the problems, it won't matter what we think of Roe v Wade; republicans will still be able to game the system in their advantage and get everything they want anyway.

Yay France!!!

Honestly France has some really progressive policies. My favourite is that they actually create subsidized part-time jobs for people with certain disabilities who are able to work but not capable of working full-time hours. I'm not sure why other countries seem unable to follow that lead.

It took me a minute to even realize that the priest was talking about saving children who were NOT BORN YET.

My immediate reaction was "You've got to be kidding, right?" Like with literally millions of children living in the world without enough food, shelter or medical care and we are worrying about FETUSES????"

Guess they just didn't manage to indoctrinate me on the anti-abortion thing early enough.

^When I was your age we were busy praying for boys in Nam.  I don't recall abortion even being mentioned since we were, of course, supposed to be abstaining.

To paraphrase George Carlin, they only care about the kids before they're born. Once they're born, fuck 'em. It's a shame that so many priests and pastors took that last part so seriously.
