I agree.

However, I've learned to curtail expressing my opinion on that because so many don't agree.

But, I will say this: if you're not going to have a death penalty, then life in prison should mean life!

Yeah, torture and then death is a bit over-the-top for me. I don't like the death penalty anyway, but if you're going to administer it, make it short and sharp. Not one strike on his body will make Shepard feel one iota better. I get where you're coming from -- "we're better than that" -- and we are precisely because we have these conversations.

I've gone from "Ayn Rand is insightful" in my 20s to "Karl Marx wasn't wrong about a few things" in my 50s.  I was an idiot back then.  I'm still an idiot, but I was back then too.

The difference between Marx and Rand is that while both were wrong about the solutions, Rand was also wrong about the problems. Marx's writing on the problems with capitalism are still some of the best and most insightful thoughts on that particular economic system.

His problem (one all too common among 19th century thinkers) was that he was a utopian at heart and thought perfection could be achieved.

Karl Marx was an absolute genius when it came to guessing wrong about the little things. You know - history, human nature, economic forces, etc.

This is exciting! Been quite some time since people who are ignorant about nuclear power generation - and are smugly confident in that ignorance - took to the streets with their stupid signs and slogans. Should be hugely entertaining.
