Why would we want to go there anyway? There's nothing there but rocks. We'd be better off just sending more advanced rovers.

^Agree wholeheartedly. There is nothing manned space flight can accomplish that can’t be done just as effectively (and a helluva lot more cheaply) by landers, probes, and robots.

There's nothing that man can accomplish by sending people to theme parks that we couldn't accomplish by sending robots there, either.

Manned space flight is adventurism, and adventurism is good for funding. You could send one rover and no people at great expense (less, relatively, ofc, but still muy expensive). Or you could send one man and get the funds for hundreds of rovers and to hell with the cost.

Having humanity on another planet is a nice back up, should Earth get hit by something from space.

Earth gets hit by stuff all day, every day. But I assume you’re thinking about a massive asteroid strike, big enough to wipe everything out.

First of all, by the time we’d be able to establish a viable colony on Mars, humankind would likely be extinct already.

Secondly, what’s to prevent Mars from suffering the same sort of impact?

Lastly, how would you convince people to go? Remember - the vast majority of human beings live out their entire lives less than 200km from where they were born.

Elon Musk is basically the ultimate prepper. I think his fears are centered on nuclear war or extermination by AI which is why he wants to go to a place difficult to reach. I personally think the Mars plan is crackers - not because the technical problems can't be overcome but because we don't have enough data (no data at all really) on long-term effects of low gravity on humans. The project is folly without that. I also don't see him conducting experiments on advanced farming techniques and life support systems. He should be majorly into R & D in this area.

Finding people to go is not an issue at all. There has been research on that question and it shows no shortage of volunteers.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
