I was part of a few comparative religions classes throughout school, but the faithful ones never deviated from their beliefs.

I didn't waver in my beliefs until I read the Bible.

It was the same for me, but I knew believers who read it too. They just didn't have the capacity to interpret it the same way that I did.

Or rewritten. There are some half-decent stories in there, but slogging through the rest of it to get to those is brutal.

Except, reading alone isn't a direct line to comprehension. Not all readers possess critical thinking skills.

Comprehension isn't the point. Boring them silly until they want nothing to do with the fool religion is the goal. I'm fondly recalling all the Shakespeare that I had shoved down my throat that way. Assign a book a week every week and you won't make it halfway through the first term without the overwhelming majority of your students resorting to the cleansing powers of fire.
