What's the purpose of fashion shows? A lot of these are never going to be used for practical life.

Certain people go to extremes for attention, especially rich people and celebrities.  Attention can be good for their social standing and careers, as a kind of advertising. Fashion caters to such people. Then there are also the artsy types who are looking for weird ways to "express themselves."

Of course others try to avoid attention.
