Theists are Insecure
RE: Theists are Insecure
Exactly what I'm referring to when I make comments about our doubts putting a cruel mirror to their own. Chip absolutely needs his god to have the support of science, because if it does not, then what? He has the faith of an ant.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Indeed. It doesn't stop at science either. Others absolutely need to believe that they have a valid and sound argument for the existence of their god, because if they don't, then what? They simply cannot consider that a god is under no obligation to comply with logic or morality, or any other notion whose discovery or existence is a product of human inquiry or fabrication. They simply cannot help but to tell god what it can and cannot be based upon the filters of their own, very human, understanding. Their god is a slave to whatever we discover, whatever we can demonstrate, whatever we can argue. This is a hollow shell of faith, and a hollow shell of a god. Had they allowed for a greater god, it wouldn't have been so easy for us to discount it completely as soon as we began to look.

What is science if not an effort to sort causes and effects? Since causes generally precede effects they will always be in the "past" eventually. Science formulates theories so that it can make useful predictions about the "future".

Science does a real good job of explaining the forces which create a land form such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It took more time to form than the bible says there has been since 'creation'. If creationist 'scientists' want to test an alternate theory .. say a great flood .. they can try studying the geologic record. It would be better science if they started by sorting out what is known about various types of rocks and how long they take to form. Then they can state a specific hypothesis to see how well the exposed formations in the canyon support it.

Science makes use of both the present and the past to make predictions about both the future and the past. It doesn't have all the answers but it does have our best, rational guess about what went down to create what we see today. In the bible all you really have is a creation myth. Hardly unique by the way. There are lots of them arising everywhere men have lived. That is the shelf your bible belongs on, not on a science reference shelf. The bible is a story not a reference book.

I very well know this but obviously people did not have running water back then did they? It's funny how you assume the position of the judge trying to encourage others to judge themselves but do you judge yourself? There is no process that explains creation of matter, or spontaneous generation, or single cellular organisms developing into multicellular organisms. Not a transition between different types of animals or observable changes of an organism to something completely different. All you have to answer these is we don't know but we know it happened by itself.
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

-4th verse of the american national anthem

"I wonder if your religion leads its adherents to be skeptical of science. I always think it should be easy for a theist to embrace science for what it is"

Swedenborg embraces the allegorical and symbolic meanings of the text. My favorite quote of his is "Anyone can see that God did not talk to a snake."

Another point in its favor then.
