It's evolved into satire but originally it was meant as a serious slam-dunk proof of 'intelligent' design and, by extension, God by comparing a banana with a Coke can, which we know to be designed. Comfort was forced to play the "I was only joking" card after being torn to shreds mercilessly by people who actually know something about the subject and who appreciate a good joke when they see one. He claimed it was all a hoax by evil atheists to make him look silly - as if he needs any help with that - and made a back-handed apology video, an anonymous voice-over guy complaining that atheists made a strawman by leaving off the Coke can part before stating:

Comfort apologized for his mistake about the banana, saying 'My apologies for not explaining myself more clearly, I was not aware that the common banana had been so modified through hybridization.' However, the truth remains that God gave man the knowledge and ability to modify it so it could perfectly fit into his hand. He did the same with big dogs so they could fit into his car and with wild cats so that they are perfectly fit for his wife.

Comfort is now reduced to performing his banana routine as legitimate comedy, as that's all it's worth. As Thunderf00t said, people enjoy laughing at a clown.
