PHOENIX (AP) - A federal judge ruled Friday that the office of America's self-proclaimed toughest sheriff systematically singled out Latinos in its trademark immigration patrols, marking the first finding by a court that the agency racially profiles people.

The 142-page decision by U.S. District Judge Murray Snow in Phoenix backs up allegations that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's critics have made for years that his officers rely on race in their immigration enforcement.

I actually live in AZ, about 90 miles from this dingbat. What slays me is that people around the country sometimes express support for this guy. Which is understandable I guess, if you live in WhiteBreadLand; I'm from the midwest suburbs originally and brown people were scarce there. But what these people may not realize is that in AZ we have many different tribes of Native Americans, as well as Hispanics, whose families have been here since before the country, much less the state, was founded. I know Hopi, Navajo, and Mexican-Americas. In this area, automatically assuming that non-Caucasian people have something to hide is not only racist, it's patently absurd.

I had a similar experience when I lived in San Antonio for three years early last decade. I had lived in the South since the age of 10, so I thought I had seen my share of race related bullshit. I was unprepared for people of Mexican descent differentiating based on skin tone and the length of the neck. 'Indian' was used as a derogatory term. Even the local news was careful to be PC and differentiate by using the term 'Mexican National'.
