Rats fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto's genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weedkiller Roundup suffered tumours and multiple organ damage, according to a French study published on Wednesday.

Oh I don't deny Monsanto's got some fucked up shit. I'm just saying that it's because of their processes and NOT because they're GMO crops. They SHOULD be banned in the US though. Their negligence is bordering on criminal.

You’ll remember, I’m sure, the recent brouhaha over a French study by scientist Gilles-Eric Séralini that purported to find evidence that a GMO-based diet caused tumors in rats. Critics immediately raised significant questions about that study and the consensus quickly became that it was poorly conceived and executed. It was also the study that caused several science writers to conclude that anti-GMO sentiment was the moral equivalent of climate denial. Good times.

So is this new study [PDF], as the critics are already asserting, “L’affaire Seralini” redux? Let’s take a look.

That looks to be an interesting study. I would like to see more studies on other animal subjects to see if that is a primarily a reaction in pigs and if it translates to other animals as well. I would also like to see the mechanism of the inflammation to be found so if it is in fact a reaction to some transgenic segment it can be found and corrected.

I'll have to remain skeptical mainly because he's not unbiased, and because of this:

In an unusual move, the research group did not allow reporters to seek outside comment on their paper before its publication in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology and presentation at a news conference in London.

Then later it shows that many people are critical of the study because of poor execution, which is probably why they didn't allow outside comment on the paper before being published.

Another take with the pig story.

I would be very surprised if GMO actually causes harm, considering that humans eat nonhuman DNA every meal and have been fine so far ... to claim that a gene that affects food will survive the temperature of the frying pan and the acidity of our stomachs and affect us the same way is quite far fetched. And why that particular modified gene and not all the other "natural" genes? Until there's good evidence, not a claim worth taking seriously.
