The way Monsanto practices its business leaves a bad taste in my mouth so I don't really enjoy the way they do things. However, most biotech companies have extreme patent agreements now so there really isn't much choice.
My largest concern with Monsanto is that they genetically modify their seeds to produce sterile plants (which is catering to the non-GMO people since they can't interbreed, but that's not my concern) so that farmers cannot replant their yield at the end of the year. They must continue purchasing the expensive seeds to replant each year. This is very costly especially in poorer areas and it leads to a dependance on the company.

I'm just thrilled to see some balanced discussion on Monsanto going on here. I attempted to have this talk on facebook. Usually, this specific group was pretty damn open minded and open to questions but when I questioned the hate for Monsanto and GMO's, I was immediately hit with death threats and comparisons to Hitler. Seriously.
Anyway, GMO's are a part of life. With the explosion in human population, there would be massive, world wide starvation without GMO crops. Period. Hating GMO food strikes me as absurd as being against childhood vaccinations. If you look past that, the question simply becomes: what is it about Monsanto that everyone hates if you take out the GMO scare.
I live on facebook. Come see me there. http://www.facebook.com/tara.rizzatto

Yes I agree with Hal9000, patenting genes should be the centre of the debate. Not whether modified genes will kill babies.

Farmers wouldn't rebuy the seeds if they weren't seeing a positive result in terms of crop size and profit.

Unless under contract, of course.
Anyway, it'd be nice to have nonsterile seeds for them

You do realize that without genetic engineering, you would be eating mostly weeds, right?
You do realize all of your so called non-GM crop didn't get to become crop in the first place without vastly more intrusive genetic engineering by 600 hundred generations of farmers than has ever been attempted by Monsanto, right?
What luddite know-nothing attitude this anti-GM reflex betrays.

That picture is a trip, neither of those tomatoes are "normal" tomatoes. There wasn't even the beginnings of such a thing until the 1800's.

I'd also like to see the source for that picture.

Looks like an over-ripe tomato next to one that's just-right.
