Anyone else like "Bill Maher"

RE: Anyone else like "Bill Maher"
Bill Maher is the most frustrating public atheist there is.

I'm not sure if his reasons for disbelieving in gods are based on critical thinking skills, or contrarianism. Although his support of evolution and global warming are evidence based.

He is an avid debunker of; conspiracies of all descriptions, miracle healers, 'Truthers', 9-11 inside job crap. Yet he believes in all sorts of other crap when it comes to health. He is an antivaxer (even tweeting that anyone that gets a flu vaccine is an idiot), cancer 'cure' quackery, he believes there is a conspiracy to keep alternative cures from the public, etc.

He seems to be compartmentalizing some of his beliefs to shield them from the same sort of critical thinking he applies to other claims
.

Here's a good article that shows why Maher's claims are erroneous -

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I think he's funny, but yea he's antivaccine. I hate medical quacks or people who spread fake medical info more than I hate religious nutjobs. So nope, cannot say I support him. Plus his business/job revolves around his political views.

He isn't the worst "public skeptic/atheist" though, Penn and Teller were famously against global warming (are they still?) and they went on Dr Oz's show! Like for god's sakes! That guy brought a medium to his show and said it was legit and even once sympathized with those who tried to cure gayness at camps (for which he later apologized ... on facebook, real sincere). But I really like their magic, because they're artists, I don't mind showing support for their art, I don't read tabloids or care about artist's stance about things mostly, but yea I wouldn't be a fan of anything else they do.

That's something that's bound to happen, unfortunately. I think Steve Harvey is funny, but I don't agree with all of his views either.

anti vaxer, thats unfortunate. You won't find anyone you agree with 100% of the time. As far as Penn and Teller, at least they changed their minds with regards to second hand smoke.

Is it inevitable? Well, it's still too stupid to support. I mean, antivaccine, come on.

Penn and Teller were on the wrong side of the second hand smoke thing? Facepalm

I sort of agree there. I love New Rules, I absolutely hated Religulous. He just came off as a smug douchebag in it.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
