Bill Maher is the most frustrating public atheist there is.
I'm not sure if his reasons for disbelieving in gods are based on critical thinking skills, or contrarianism. Although his support of evolution and global warming are evidence based.
He is an avid debunker of; conspiracies of all descriptions, miracle healers, 'Truthers', 9-11 inside job crap. Yet he believes in all sorts of other crap when it comes to health. He is an antivaxer (even tweeting that anyone that gets a flu vaccine is an idiot), cancer 'cure' quackery, he believes there is a conspiracy to keep alternative cures from the public, etc.
He seems to be compartmentalizing some of his beliefs to shield them from the same sort of critical thinking he applies to other claims
.
Here's a good article that shows why Maher's claims are erroneous -

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
