It's passed down because everyone in a given family believes. Are you suggesting the parents should have excluded their kid from their religion? Maybe left him in the house while they goto church? Is this better? Is this what atheist do with their kids when they have a family out ting but don't want to bring their kids along?

Sure, it's moronic that they praise god for this and even a little creepy. But horrible? I don't see it.
