You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. 
Actually, I was imagining the voice of our beloved Statler Waldorf as I was reading through your excerpts (as if I know what his voice sounds like
 ). IRL, my supervisor is very much one of those individuals who would actually read this stuff and go "Yup, yup, true, yup, I know it, damn atheists, yup, yup..."
