Cosmos with Neil De Grasse Tyson Premieres Tonight

I think it'll be more of an overview show, touching on some areas more in depth (like the evolution of the eye) as examples of the broader topic under discussion. I also get the feeling their trying to cover a lot of ground - talking about not only how the sciences affect us here on Earth, but also tying it to the exploration of the universe and what possibilities that field holds for research of other stellar and planetary objects.

The show has obvious anti-religion undertones so there is more on the agenda then trying to get people excited by science.

Obvious anti-religion undertones? Wanna point those out? All I saw was facts.

It doesn't have anti-religion undertones.

It has "don't pretend to know what you don't know" undertones, and religion just happens to be a subset of that.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

The show is about science.
And how it has successfully and consistently dismantled many many superstitious notions created by the ignorant and perpetuated by the lazy.

If the science presented in the show puts creationists on edge, then that's their own damn fault for believing in and perpetuating false notions for so long.

Are you suggesting facts cannot be used to convey an anti-religious message?

If the show were "telling fuckers off"...it wouldn't be an undertone would it.

I think he's saying that it's not science's fault that facts convey what you perceive to be an anti-religious message.

And that's what's needed because subtlety is wasted on people who think a dead jew came back to life to atone for their fucking sins.

I don't care that the show has an anti religious undertones as long as they communicate that message with undistorted facts.

If you want an example. When he talks about Halley's "prophecy" he goes out of his way to point out it precision in comparison to the "prophecy" of mystics.
