Accepting Atheism

Hello, I am also a recent atheist. For about three years. I was a Christian for the early part of my life and then at 18 years old became a Muslim. Before I decided to accept the REALITY(Atheism) I was agnostic for one year.

Proof:
1. How many Atheists were "possessed" by demons?
2. God(Jesus) does not heal amputees. Why?
3. Dinosaurs! ...used to exist...Millions of years ago.
4. The concept of Morality existed years before the Abrahamic religions.
5. There is a possibility that ETs exist. Where in religious sources does ETs fit into the religious texts?
6. The previous four questions would mean that "demons" derive from a psychological malfunction, of the mind&body, since most cases derive from "Christian" families.(Agents of Socialization)/(Placebo effect)!
7. Point #1 means that there are no "demons" then there is no "hell". Therefore, there are no "angels" and there is no "heaven".
8. There is a possibility that this universe may contain some natural laws in which humans have not yet discovered.

Congrats on your freedom from the bondage of faith--that's how I've seen it, anyway. For me one day I just asked myself realistically, truthfully, if I believed any of it. To me, it was baffling that one group of people could be all knowing, that anyone that was mortal could know or understand the greatest human mysteries. It was laughable--laughable to think that any group of people had the answer or even could have the answer. So I told myself, NO, I don't and CAN'T believe it, my reason, my logic will never let me. the writings and debates of Christopher Hitchens gave me the balls (so to speak) to come out as an anti-theist. Religion poisons everything.

Here in AU, no-one really gives a rats about religious beliefs in day to day life... nothing is pushed in your face...
if you want religion, you go look for it.

All I can say about pending friction within the family and/or community is that you need to weigh up whether your outspoken belief will be worth all the drama.
Not believing or believing is a state of mind only, (although they'd like you to believe otherwise), so no-one and nothing will change that in your mind irrespective of they or you do.
There's no harm done if you want to go along with the bullshit to keep eg: mum happy.
It will impact on your time on Sundays for example, and yes you will be bored shitless at times, and smile a lot, but only you can decide if it's worth it.
I've been taking my mum to church (Greek Orthodox) regularly until she passed away. My 2 older sisters weren't religious either, but we went along because it made mum happy.

I admire your ability to support your family, that's a much kinder gesture than I could manage. Going to church would feel like a cancer and a lie in my life and I feel to inspire others that are scared to express their atheism that it is crucial to make a stand. I'm rather impervious to drama and rather allergic to the status quo. I've spent too much of my life lying to make other people happy.

I suppose you're right. This might have been too hastily added, after all, it's not those that share our beliefs and experiences that challenge us and force us to question, but those that are different. Picking apart something like that's a little pedantic though...

I went through similar phases to the ones you describe, I think all those feelings are pretty common to those leaving faith behind. It's strange how ultimately, after you go through the anger or resentment part, you end up feeling so much more at peace than when believing in God. Well, at least I do. Like accepting reality and not grasping for fairy tales really changes how you look at everything!
