Buffed privateers/destroyers are *awesome* for taking cities - but keep them out of range until you're ready to issue the coup de grace.
I usually just have them around to help with any incoming ships/in range troops. I don't like risking them being damaged by cities. They seem to take forever to repair.
I don't think I've had the chance to use privateers against cities yet. I had two in my last game but they were badly damaged fighting some insane build up of barbarians. I'll give them a go next time.
Once I reach the modern era, I'll use a few battleships, two destroyers, a few submarines in a naval group. The destroyers I *only* use to take coastal cities once they've been reduced. You're correct, they do take a long time to heal, but they are cheap to buy/produce. Should be pretty obvious enough what to do with your battleships, and submarines are for dealing with anything your opponent is stupid enough to put in the water.
I've managed to get domination victories on Large Island maps without ever using a single ground combat unit for offense.
(This is all after I've achieved naval superiority.)

Yep, on all points. If I were going to play against multiplayer noobs, I'd rush their cities with Warriors.

There should be a ctrl-z option when moving units. I do it all the time. I forget that I have a worker unit selected, I go off looking for another unit to control, click it and then my worker unit miles away starts jumping into the fucking sea.

I hate it the most when you have like 3 units next to each other but when you move one it suddenly shoots you to a city that needs a new production order.. That weird moment too as your turn starts and you can't actually move anything even though you can select stuff.

Yeah, the reason that Civ has never had an Undo movement option is because it would be easily exploitable to get free intel about enemy unit placements.
I've never played a turn-based game that allowed it.
It sucks. Look before you leap, I suppose.

I don't like the sporadic jumping around either.

Yeah I get why they don't have a ctrl z. Still would be nice on rare occasions when you've fucked up.
I just played for a couple hours, discovered a whole new continent where the 3 remaining civs reside. Got a shit ton of gold from trading and discovering shit, spent it on wiping out the Persians. They only have one city left now, the only down side is the Siamese also took a couple of cities off them and now they've denounced me. So, on my continent, it's me and the Siamese with half/half control (with a few city states and what remains of the Persians). The other continent has the Aztecs, Iriqious and Egyptians. The Egyptians have built a great wall and it looks fucking awesome. They seem to be the dominant ones of the other three civs. For now though I'm consolodating, building up my cities and preparing for an inevitable attack from the Siamese.
I don't care if nobody else cares, I just like recounting the events that happen in my game

You know, I like the research agreements in this game. provided you have enough gold, and you've found most/all the other civs, you can boost your tech through research agreements. the only problem being that the other person gets a boost too. It's not the most efficient way to get ahead, but you can at least keep up with the curve.

I did one of these, I didn't really notice it had any affect. I'm guessing it just reduces the time it takes to discover new tech?

After thirty turns, you suddenly get a boost that will save some turns on a tech. I don't know how much exactly, though. Just remember it isn't a boost for thirty turns. It's a boost after thirty turns.
