Serving god means giving that money away.
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys"
The only wealth god ever expresses a desire for us to have is the wealth of his kingdom, which is not of this world. The overall message is that god will provide for the faithful, in this life (not that he will make them rich, not that they have to go get money to pay their bills, but that he will provide for them as he provides for birds), and that the only riches to be had- are in the next.
There are examples of wealthy christians in the bible, sure, and they seem to be the perfect excuse to go off on a tirade about wealth at every turn.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

To some extent that is the case. I certainly agree that it seems difficult to reconcile wealth and being a Christian but possessing money and enjoying one's self doesn't seem inherently paradoxical to Jesus' message (or his actions; he wined and dined and possessed money).

I would hardly call it "wining and dining". He ate, and there was wine there - but seeing as how the wine wouldn't kill you whereas the water would - it was no indicator of wealth or leisure. How much money do you reckon he had, and did he seem all that interested in a "job" - even to pay bills? Who footed the bill for his ministry, for example? As to enjoying one's self - you aren't even supposed to think about some things.......it's a fairly rapid fire assault from start to finish.

Jesus was basically a freeloader who lived off of hookers and rich people. The interesting thing is that if they had taken his advice about selling all of their stuff and giving the money to the poor he wouldn't have had a place to bunk or costly perfume to douse himself with.

Come to think of it, they probably wouldn't have me.....
I'd be like a rock star in the UPC if I reconverted.
