refuting misconceptions:1-women in Islam
this thread is made for the purpose of removing the misconceptions about Islam. I have recognized that most of the members lack the right information about islam in different aspects that’s because the media is doing a really ugly work especially after 9/11.i will try to clarify those misconceptions as I can and I will try to use the Quran in defending my position so u can b sure that am not preaching or telling lies
this is the second thread I open in a week and am really busy this days at work and am also getting married so if I am late in answering any question don’t worry I will answer as soon as possible
I will start by telling a misconception and explain it in general then I will wait for ur questions in specifications then after we feel that a point is clear we will move to another one(plz if u can put ur comments in a form of a question that will make it easier for me to clarify things and not getting in an argue without an end)
At first I want to clarify that women and men are equal but they are different not in the way that a man is better than a woman they are different in the way that they complete each other I will try to explain the role of women in Islam in different aspects of life:

1-judgement in sight of Allah:

“O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)”.(quran 49:13)
“If any do deeds of righteousness, be they male or female and have faith, they will enter Heaven, and not the least injustice will be done to them.”(Quran 4:124)
There is no difference between men and women ragarding how they are judged by Allah

2-woman as a mother:

“And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.”(Quran 31:14)
“We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth”(Quran 46:15)
There is a lot of verses that show the great position of the the woman as a mother but I think these two verses made my point

3-woman as a wife:

“O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may Take away part of the dower ye have given them, except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good.”(Quran 4:19)
there is a saying(by muhammed(pbuh)) No 736, 7396. It says that, ‘the most perfect of the believers are those that are best in character and behavior, and those that are best to their family and their wives’.
The man cannot deal with his wife with harshness but in contrary he must be kind with her
“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means”(Quran 4:34)
Its on the man shoulder to protect and provide financial support to his family
If a Woman works, which she does not have to whatever earning she gets, it is absolutely her property She need not spend on the house if she wants to spend it is her free will.and there is no place in the Quran or sunnah that says that woman should not work but she should do her part as a mother even if she is working
Anything other than that the women and men are equal if the Quran didn’t mention that it is the responsibility of one of them.(in Islam cooking and cleaning is the responsibily of both the husband and the wife)

4-when getting married:

-When getting married she has the right to refuse the husband without showing any reasons as she can get divorce also without giving any reason
Ibn Abbas reported that a girl came to the Messenger of Allah, and she reported that her father had forced her to marry without her consent. The Messenger of God gave her the choice...between accepting the marriage or invalidating it the girl said: 'Actually, I accept this marriage, but I wanted to let women know that parents have no right to force a husband on them.'" (Ibn-Majah) [11]
- “And give the women (on marriage) their dower as a free gift; but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, Take it and enjoy it with right good cheer.”(Quran 4:4)
the woman has no financial resposibility when getting married but in fact she must receive a gift from the husband before marriage according to his abilities and according to the norms of where they live(in egypt its about 7 to 10 thousand dollars) but if she asked for divorce she should give it back
-She have the right to write whatever she wants in the marriage contract ex:if she mentioned that she don’t want her husband to travel outside her country and the husband agreed he will have to take permission after marriage from his wife before travelling or she can get divorced

5-inheritance:

Inheritence is so complicated in islam so that it assure justice to everyone but always the young generation is taking more percentage(wether male or female) sometimes man take more than woman, woman take more than a man, sometimes they are equal. and in some situations the girl gets a share and the man get nothing(if I start explaining different situations it will take a lot of time so u can search it or u can ask me later I will answer it in details)

5-women and law:

-I have searched a lot trying to get differences in islamic law between men and women I found nothing they are always saying when someone. they didn’t even say if that someone is man or woman
-There is only one difference in being a witness if its something financial witness must be 1 man or 2 woman(as financial issues is his resposibility so he will be included in this situations more)
If its something related to women they don’t take men as a witness only women(like if the husband accused his wife of unchastity the female witness invalidate the male witness)

6-covering her body(hijab):

I don’t know why everyone is making a big deal of this if a woman wants to show her body its freedom and if a woman wants to cover u attack her?i never understood this but from the comments I found here in the forums I got that most of u think that they are forced to wear like that and that is so not true
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.”(Quran 2:256)
no one(father, husband, brother or even mother) has the right to force a woman to wear hijab its her choice I live in a muslim country some is wearing hijab and some is not wearing

NB:hijab is not what u see in the tv(the black dress covering face and hands) hijab is covering the body except face and hands by anything (no special cloth) I will explain later about why its prohibited for a woman to show her body but this will take another thread so I will prepare it and explain it later after we finish these points

I tried to make this thread short as I can but I wanted to cover most of the aspects regarding women in I will b waiting for ur questions regarding women in Islam(not only the points I mentioned anything regarding women in islam)

Okay, so essentially your holy book says that as long as a person follows the rules of that book, your god will allow them into heaven. No religion based reason for the way women are treated here.

The book says that the god commands you to honor thy mother. This does not show how mothers are or are not treated, as women, by the Islamic society.

Again, there is nowhere in your book (you say) that says a woman should be treated harshly by her husband, but that verse you quoted does not show us how woman are treated by Islamic society.

(May 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm)mo3taz3nbar Wrote: 4-when getting married:

Does this actually hold true in Islamic society? It still seems that your book has a lot of rules about women. Odd.

(May 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm)mo3taz3nbar Wrote: 5-inheritance:

This sounds about the same as inheritance anywhere. And this is the first time you haven’t simply quoted your book. This time you talked about society.

(May 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm)mo3taz3nbar Wrote: 5-women and law:

This would vary pretty greatly from nation to nation, I’d imagine.

Doesn’t this vary from sect to sect?

Going off of what was quoted... it seems like he views men and women as of equal worth... but recognizes their difference Sleepy So I don't see what is to pity regarding that. Thinking

Of course they are different....women are the ones on the wrong end of the whip if they piss him off!

Quote:THE QURAN ON WIFE BEATING

Below are 6 English versions of the Quran verse 4:34. This passage lays the foundation for wife beating. I provided all these to show their similarity. These translations are all from recognized scholars. I have corrected some archaic spelling. My comments are in [ ] type brackets.

Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God has gifted the one above the other, and on account of the outlay they make from their substance for them. Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband's absence, because God has of them been careful. But chide those for whose refractoriness you have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourge them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great!

This bullshit was written by MEN. Do the math.

I do not believe the women has that choice to wear the covering or not. You say no one forces them, yet we can sit here and watch youtube videos all day long showing women being arrested and harassed by the authorities for just that reason. They get stopped for "too much ankle" showing. The women are beaten, jailed, killed for refusing to wear or speaking out against this forced dress code.

Do I really need to post these videos? Elio posted an excellent video of a woman who escaped a muslim country and is telling of the abuses against women for such superficial things as walking outdoors without a male escort or showing too much ankle. There are many of these women who can be found telling of their captivity in Islamic countries.

Who are we to believe? You here spouting "That is not true!" or the countless women who have escaped captivity and all sharing simular stories?
I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.

It seems that it may our Muslim 'friend' who has misconceptions about Islam.

Quote:I live in a muslim country some is wearing hijab and some is not wearing

Does every Muslim live in such a country? No? Then you are using a specific situation to refute the 'misconceptions' about Islam in general. It doesn't work that way.

Quote:no one(father, husband, brother or even mother) has the right to force a woman to wear hijab its her choice

There are a lot of people lying about this then. Or, you are naive enough to think that the behavior of people you know equals the behavior of all people who share similar beliefs with them.

RE: refuting misconceptions:1-women in Islam
Wow Mo3, that stuff sounds horrible. I would never want to live as a muslim woman. All your separate but equal crap is just an excuse to tell women what to do, and to own her like a pet dog. What a cruel oppressive regime you follow.

By the way, how much money did you pay to buy your wife? Has she been mutilated? How do you feel about having sex with someone who is only doing it to please you and the god she believes in, but who will never get horny at all?

How come women are only honored for their motherhood when they make a son?

I would never give up my freedom for slavery. Your religion sucks when it comes to women. I am glad many women are starting to leave it. If a muslim woman needs help in getting her freedom, I will go out my way to help her. They are fighting the worst of sexism in current times. It's 2010 Mo. The world has moved far ahead of your barbaric cruel book.

So, Mo, what do you think? Hmm, I wonder if you will even talk with me directly, since I am female and so pathetically weak, er, equal, that I must be 'protected' from ordinary discussion with men. Let's see..... Smile
Also, will islam allow me to have 4 men living with me (as husbands)? I would treat them every bit as nice as your men treat their wives, nicer actually. I can afford to feed, shelter and clothe them because I have a pretty good job. Will islam allow my nonharmful lifestyle? Over here in the modern world, I can live like this without punishment. What would happen if I did this in your country?

Which country is it, by the way? It would be nice to know which theocratic nation's laws we are discussing.

RE: refuting misconceptions:1-women in Islam
Let's see what they have to say about it.

http://www.islamicgarden.com/article1016.html

Quote:1. Proper hijab (concealment for the Muslim woman) dictates that the entire body must be covered, although the face and hands may be exposed. Some women choose to cover themselves further by means of a face veil and gloves, and this is perfectly fine.

I'll take this, anytime.

I'm not so uptight that I can't just admire the view without attacking her.
