Respect is a weird word. People say respect is earned, not given. But my father believes he deserves respect just for being my dad. And if I do something a little out of line then somehow I have no respect at all.

No you should not have any respect for anyone or any thing. You should value people and value what they demonstrate. But you own no one any loyalty merely by demand.
